Question Looking for a Plate Mate

Hi, I just bought a Beetle without a front plate mount and i have to put a front plate on my car. I have heard about the Plate Mate, and I really want one! I heard they are no longer made. Does anyone have one for sale? Or know where I can get one?

Thanks for looking!

Does anyone have any leads as to where to find one? I am really desperate. My uncle told me that I could be pulled over for not having my front plate mounted on my car ( I have it in my front window) and the ticket could be up to $200!
I really dont want to drill holes in my bumper!

I don't know of anyone selling one and I'm not ready to part with mine, BUT . . .

You might want to touch base with GINA. Last year she bought a retractable plate holder that mounts, I believe, from underneath the car - no holes in your bumper! It flips up to show the plate and if you're at a car show, you can flip it down to hide the plate. I don't know if she's using hers - if not, maybe she'd sell it to you. If she is, she can at least tell you where/who she got it from. She's very nice and a wonderful example of an ultimate orger.

Good luck!

It wouldn't be terribly hard to make one...I will have to look into it. Anyone have pics of the original one, particularly off the car?

I'll be in need of something similar when I get and install my ABD Cup bumper, though with that one I was just thinking of screwing in an angled bracket from the underneath side of the top of the grille opening.

So if I happened to come up with a decent "Plate Mate 2"...anyone think I could make some cash doing so?

I would look at a place like Walmart, they will probably have some plate holders for trailers that you could make your own for cheap and it would be simple

looked around a little bit, since i've been looking for one of these for a while...

did a search of "tow hook license plate holder" and found a couple of things.

from gominigo, there is a vw version of their tow hook bracket:

VW - GoMiniGo-Home of Innovative Products for your car

"The price of this Beetle kit (shown with the offset bracket which will come in the Beetle kit) is $70 plus shipping."

not sure if the other bracket i saw will work, but it might be worth a phone call or email to find out if one of the kits from http://www.moweraxle.com/
will fit a vw...their Cayman/Boxster Front License Plate Tow Hook Kit is $84.95 + shipping.

hope this helps. i'm leaning towards getting the gominigo bracket.

Nice find Warren...I'll be buying one soon. We'll see how it works out and looks.

If I ever make anything, it would be cheaper than $70...wouldn't look as sleek as a Plate Mate...but it would be functional.

Whoever is the first to get one, will you fill us in please and post pics?

Anyone interested in organizing a Group Buy? Check out this link: http://www.gominigo.com/GroupBuys.html

We'd need a minimum of 6 people. One person has to pay, and they have to be shipped to that person.

I suppose I could do it. What do you say people? We should have 3 already...who else wants in?

Default tow bolt thread?

Anyone know the thread size of the tow hook thingy?

Can't find my PlateMate, and they're starting to get a little picky around here. Guess if we don't have front plates the
terrorists win.

I figure it shouldn't be too hard to get a bolt or piece of
all-thread welded to some kind of plate holder. Or just run
it thru the plate itself.

hmmm, finding metric all-thread, that may be a trip.

Finding metric all thread should be easy, but finding one that matches the pitch of the tow hook will be ridiculous.

What about finding a tow hook in a junkyard and just using that?
