Default FS: CUSTOM CUP HOLDER for '98-01.5 NB

I am one of those people who seems to always have a drink with me almost everywhere I go.
And when I go to a fast food drive through I always "go large, upsize, king size or biggie" my drink.

As soon as I bought my '01 NB the first thing I saw that I didn't like was the placement of the factory cup holders.
So I thought I'd take a little time and see if I could come up with a simple but very functional mod.
It is a little intrusive to the passengers leg room but much less so than dumping a full 32oz drink on them

The beauty of this mod is that you do not have to modify your stock console and requires no tools what so ever to install.
All you have to do is twist the existing stock cup holder 1/4 turn to remove it.
Place the new cup holder around the raised cup holder socket and reinstall the stock cup holder. See the video at the end of this post.
Also as long as the passenger seat is tracked back to what I would call it's "normal position" the seat
doesn't hit the new cupholder when flipped fwd. to gain access to rear seat.
It is made of a very sturdy material called Kydex, that is a strong 1/8" thick plastic (acrylic-polyvinyl chloride alloy)
so you don't have to worry about your passenger bumping into it and knocking it off.

I will build the new cup holder and cover in vinyl that is close to your stock VW interior color for $40.00 Shipped to anywhere in the US.
Shipping outside the US would be based on your location.
I can also cover them in custom vinyl colors to match your custom interior color.

To order one send $40 via Pay Pal to bugshop @ charter.net

Make sure when ordering to include your shipping info as well as what color you would like.

Stock inadequate cup holders

stock inadequate cup holders with a 20 oz drink bottle

This is what I've come up with

And a few shots with a 12 oz can, 20 oz bottle and assorted fast food cups, 20 oz, 32 oz, 42 oz, and the big boy 44 oz.

12 oz can

20 oz bottle

20 oz cup

32 oz cup

42 oz

and the Big Boy 44 oz

And a very short video to show how quick and easy it is to install and remove the new cup holder.

R&R VIDEO

It looks a little roomy for the smaller can and bottle.
I would be concerned for splash/spillage on hard turns. Have you noticed this at all??

The cans are in there pretty low... But I'm sure you could get a holder of some sort for the smaller cups and such from walmart or something for less than $5... Its kind of tough to make a one size fits all...

I made it where the smaller diameter drinks would sit deep into it just for that reason. I have not experienced any spillage under normal driving with 12 oz can or the 20 oz bottle.
But this gives me a reason to find an empty parking lot and try to make it spill... Now if my wife will be willing to go with me and hold the camera

I'd hope you are going to have some type of lid on it if you're going to be driving like Mario no matter what cup holder you're using
One thing that is good about this mod. is that you still have access to the stock cup holders when it's installed.
As mentioned, it's hard to to make something like this that is perfect for every situation. But with these being custom made, I can, and will be glad to cut the opening to any size that is desired.

As they are now, the opening is right at 3" in diameter and 2 1/4" deep.

OK you asked for it LOL
My wife wasn't real happy about it, I guess I didn't make myself clear about how I was going to be driving.
So, sorry about her dropping the camera, but she wouldn't let me get a "do over" LOL
Anyway there was no spillage.

Got it, Thanks.

The link works for me and had the wife check it from her computer and it worked for her.
If anyone else is having trouble viewing the video LMK.

Thumbs up Biggie Size it

I decided to order a cupholder this weekend and it arrived today. The vinyl work and stitching is exceptional. The color is close to the stock trim, I might have selected black instead of grey if I knew it was going to be a bit different... The quality of the holder is great, it fits snugly around the stock cup holder and sits nicely on the stock trim.

I can't wait to put a large coffee cup in it when I drive to work tomorrow and not have to reach behind the armrest to use the rear cup holder!

Great product, fast shipping, excellent quality.

THANKS!!!

I hope you enjoy it

As for the color, even though the gray is close, it is not a perfect match. I am on the search for a perfect match for the gray and the tan.

Although the gray color is slightly different, I took a client out to lunch in Herbie yesterday. They thought the cup holder was a factory part of the car. The guy was about 6'3 and had no problem with legroom either!

Great invention- VW definitely didn't design cup holders in a practical way for us biggie-sized Americans
