Default Where to buy black/white prints?

My daughter (15) is in the process of redecorating her room. She's the only kid left at home with the sibs at college, so she's staking her claim and going for a more grown-up look (can't believe she's tired of the adorable little-girl stuff we fixed her up with 10 years ago when we built the house )

In the ladies' room at Jason's Deli recently she saw some great black and white photos that she just loved. Some were people, some architechtural details, some animals, etc. She really wants to find some cool b/w shots to frame and put in her room.

We found some great ones online but it seems like they're all $80-150... too much for these poor peeps. Does anyone know of a place to buy b/w photos (5x7, or 8x10) for less? (As in, way less... $10-15?) Or am I dreaming? Thanks for the help... Donna

You could allways go on the internets, to some of the free stock photography sites..

Find pictures you like, and then head to kinkos to get them printed (providing you can download a good high resolution image)

Or better yet, make your own. If you have a digital camera or even a film camera, go out around town and make your own shots. Download or have the film developed but have them make a picture disk. Use any of the various free software packages out there (I personally like www.irfanview.com) and turn the pictures into black and white. Crop to your liking and then have them printed in the sizes you want. Fine some cool black inexpensive frames (Hobby Lobby or Michaels or even WalMart) and mount them yourself. You need the best resolution you can get on your camera no matter what the pixels are.

Hey, thanks guys.

James, I hadn't thought of Kinkos-- I just knew that my printer wouldn't give me the quality print that I'd want. That's a good idea.

Susan, I did think about taking the shots myself, just not sure I have the confidence in my photographic abilities For some reason she fell in love with a picture of an ancient old organ grinder with his monkey. Those are in rather short supply here in Old Glory. I don't have a digital camera, but I do shoot b/w film in my N65 occasionally.

I appreciate the help

In my living room at home we have some Asian tiles mounted and framed on one wall. On the other we have b/w photos of orchids that are matted and framed. Very attractive without being really girly. Just artsy.

Have you tried Ikea? They usually have some fun cheap B&W prints, and frames to go along with them.

You might try Michaels (I used to be a custom framer there) and check out their art section.)

On the other hand, I have no clue on what art galleries you might have in your area, but why not go take a look there too. The gallery I am member of (Metropolis The Gallery)we have prints that are relatively cheap and are sometimes even signed.

Also, check out the greeting card isle at your fave store. I usually see all kinds of B&W photo's used on cards.

Another option would be to let us know what kinds of looks she likes, and perhaps we could come up with something that would work. Perhaps start a thread and see what we can come up with.

Thanks, John and Justin... you guys had some great ideas too- I knew my org people would be a lot of help

We're about 4 hours from any kind of gallery. There is a Michaels in Abilene (about 65 miles away).. I'll have to look there sometime.

Here's the one she really, really likes best (not sure why, but all my kids have had a monkey thing)

Some others that she liked

And this isn't b/w, but she met this photographer (Wyman Meinzer, Texas' state photographer) when he did a workshop for the 4-H photography project kids a couple of years ago. We all are big fans of his art, but it does look like what's outside her window, and I think she's going for stuff she views as more unusual

I've seen lots of pics from org members that are even better than what I'm seeing online. We have some talented people here! I love Gail's baby zebra shots and the b/w ones of her NB too

Thanks again for the help-- I have several places to at least start looking. Now, if I can just convice the diva to be more patient-- she wants them on the wall 'yesterday'

I have some int architechtural detailed shots as well.

LMK

edit: Have grinder -- no monkey in the pic --- he's in the video but not the pic, sorry.
