We use an Epson R220. We chose this particular model so we could print on cd's. The image quality is quite good for an ink jet printer.

We have the HP8250
http://static.flickr.com/21/32487555_98ddbf4e05_m.jpg

Got it at SAM's for just over $100.

We like it because it is a 6 ink system. Cartridges are readly available at Target for about $10 each. Since they are individual cartridges you don't end up throwing out ink like the all in one cartridges of older technology.
Also, boarderless printing is great! And a built in multi-card reader is a plus.

We researched this printer on CNET.com and are really blown away by the performance and images it produces.

I go to Costco.....at 14 cents per print, its far cheaper than using one's own printer and supplies.

Epson is by far the best brand to go with. Most see it as the industry standard. However they like to use a lot of ink. Canon printers are good as well and don't use the ink as fast. I have an epson currently that is great but if I were to buy one today I would go with a canon. HP is another good printer but ink can be more expensive because some models have the print heads in the ink cartridge so replacing them is more expensive. Whatever you get in order to get the best quality make sure it is a "photo" printer. You will be able to tell this because it will use "photo" inks. Also, the all-in-one printers are good but you will typically get better results just a printer. Like mentioned above getting a printer that has individual ink tanks helps with throwing away unused ink that you may have in a combined color cartridge. 6 tanks is a good number to have. 1 black, 1 yellow, 1 cyan, 1 magenta, 1 photo cyan, and 1 photo magenta are the normal seperations.

I did go out today and buy an HP C3180 Photosmart All-in-One printer today at OfficeMax.....cause I needed a better scanner, and buying it on sale at 40% off ($59 vs $99 list) was cheaper than buying color/black ink cartridges for an older HP printer (720C) that still works well. The ink on this newer printer is half the cost (go figure). This printer has memory card slots for direct printing and the software allows you to move files from the card onto the computer. The scanner works so much better then the Visioneer scanner I have had for 3 years.

Hey~ That is the name of the one I got (two of, in fact). It's a nice scanner, about $85 at Circuit City, I think. USB, Mac and PC compatible.

I think Epson vs. HP is almost as divided as Mac vs. PC.

I do think that Epson scanners are superior to HP scanners...but when it comes to printers I have to go with HP for the reason that the print head IS in each cartridge. I have also had no issues with print quality with any of the 3 HP's I have owned.
I used to work in the PC lab at school and someone had the great idea to save money and get a bunch of Epson printers for each computer instead of spending the money on a good color printer. The issue with every one of them was that after a certain number of prints the heads would clog - and therefore basically be trash. I heard that the cost of replacing the heads on those was about $100-150 which was about the cost of a new printer...of course this was the technology back in 2000 so they might have changed it.

I did alot of research before getting my current HP and Cannon was the other brand in the running...I think I had checked and Epson still had separate print heads so I passed on looking at ratings of them on CNET.

Marvins dad: now that I read your post and then read mine again, I sort of contradict myself in the first few lines saying that epson is by far the best but if I bought one today I would buy canon. I guess it really depends on the level of printer you are looking at. I work at a camera store where se sell epson and canon printers. Most consumers looking for good at home quality prints are better of with a canon most of the time. But at the professional level, we sell more wide format printers of the Epson name. We do not carry HP but I have talked with many of the research and development guys that come in from HP and what they have to say about their printers is amazing so I don't doubt their quality. Simply put stay with any of the three brands mentioned above any you can't go wrong.
