Default What Kind of Digital Camera Do You Have??

Greetings,

I'm noticing a lot of nice pics here on the org. All due to the wonders of digital photography. It would be a great help for me as well as other potential buyers to know what type of digital camera you own. This would help our purchasing process all the more easier.

Please be as descriptive as possible i.e. Brand, Megapixels, Price ect. Soon I'll be through borrowing my Sisters camera and buying one-time use cameras. Thanks

I suggest going out to one of those sites where they compare brands.

I researched mine for a year before buying one....
I have a Canon Powershot A80

4.0 Megapix
lots of features.....I bought mine at a Camera store....which I know sounds crazy...but I got lots of extras with it...and a year of free prints, download ability to there site to have my pictures printed at there store and have them ready when I get there...and lots of discounts

use to have a Canon S400 (4mp $400ish) - loved it because it was small. then upgraded to a Canon SD550 (7.1mp $450). it's even smaller and better than my old one. love how it fits in my pocket while i walk around.

I began with a Nikon CoolPix 995, a 3.2MP camera that cost me $599 back in 2001.

I now shoot with two Nikon D100's. It is a DSLR with 6.2MP, and I paid $1200 for the first body two years ago and $499 for the second last month.

I have been shooting Nikon for almost 15 years, so that is why I choose to continue with Nikon. Not one missed opportunity because of any malfunction. Plus the Nikon SLR and DSLR bodies will use ANY of the Nikon lenses, even those made in 1959! That is a HUGE range of glass (lenses) to choose from! Sure, you may lose a bit of hightech functions like 3D Color Matrix Metering.

SLR--> Single Lens Reflex (Means that you look directly TTL, which is Through the Lens) and has the benefits of interchangable lenses.

DSLR--> Digital Single Lens Reflex.

Even though I have been and probably always will be a Nikon Shooter, that doesn't mean that the "other" brands are inferior. I get asked "What brand of camera should I buy" a lot. Honestly, you can't go wrong with the big names like Nikon, Canon, Sony, Konica/Minolta, Kodak, Olympus, Samsung, or even Pentax. They all make good cameras.

As for how many MegaPixels you need? My opinion is that if you aren't making 11x14 prints, you don't need a huge amount of MP. I have made beautiful 20x30 prints from my 3.2 MP Nikon 995! You can not tell it is from a digital camera!

Do you only want a digicam for posting pics on the internet? Save your money and buy a 3.2MP or even a 4MP camera. Those are great, if even a bit overkill.

Be sure to stay away from "Digital Zoom" as it crops only the middle part of the image causing pixelization.

What else do you need to know?

I have three; all are Canon.

The first one is a 20D, and the second is a Rebel XT.

The 20D is more professional; the XT not as much.
They both are DSLR's and also can use all the Canon EOS lens, which is quite a lot.

The 20D (8.2 MP and 5 fps) cost around $1,400, but I have seen it cheaper.
The Rebel XT (8 MP and 3fps) cost me $769, and I got a $100 dollar rebate coming to me as well.

I use the Rebel purely for Black and White, although it can do so much more...

The 20D I use for everything.

What Justin said about MP is true. But if you can afford more MP, it does not hurt to have more. You can do more with more information, however, if you have less, you are limited by that.

The third is a simple Canon 'point and shoot' digital (PowerShot A-430), 4.0 MP, that gets great shots. That was only $170 or so.

Oh, and don't forget, that you want to get at least a 1GB card for whatever camera you get. Or more, if the camera can take it. It may cost more, out of the box, but you won't be buying film, so the cost evens out.

I have a small Panasonic Lumix digital Camera. It has no viewfinder ... just the display on the back.

I have a Fuji FinePIx 1300 from like 2001... it's still ticking; I see no need to replace it.

it's a 1.3MP camera that retailed for less than $200 new.

I have a Fuji Finepix 2800. Its a larger bodied camera with a 6X optical zoom and though its only 2.1mp, it takes very decent quality pictures. I bought it primarily for the higher zoom capability.

I've got a Pentax point and shoot. Not sure of the model number, but it is a 6mp unit.

That was to replace my Olympus dimage 7.

But only temporarily, I am looking at the Pentax *ist DS2

6.3mp, uses all (even non-digital) Pentax lenses.

Wow! You guys are a big help. Yes, I could have gone to Consumer reports and got various reviews. But seeing the nice pics taken here on the org, what better place to get reviews.

I have lots to chew on. I'll keep you posted on my decision/purchase.

JDesigns,
Thanks for moving the post. Sorry.

No biggie! It seems that there are quite a few people here that don't know about the Photo forum. I'm trying to change that though!

I have two:
Canon EOS Digital Rebel (6.2mp)
Canon Powershot S410 (fits in my pocket, 4mp)

The best site I know of online to get digital camera reviews is www.dpreview.com - awesome, awesome resource.
