After an unfortunate mishap with a 2012 Golf TDI. We had the vehicle replaced with a Brand new 2014 Beetle TDI which reminded my wife of her old 1968 beetle. The Beetle is so nice but needed that sporty look so we added the rear spoiler, factory fog lights and tinted the windows. Next up some performance mods......
Okay, bought a used 2013 beetle turbo exhaust system for $60 bucks locally. Made a cut added in a band clamp and fit it all together. Got rid of the cheap chrome tips VW uses and ordered some stainless tips along with a new rear spoiler. Should have those two new parts next week but other then that it came out perfect.
So, you took s stock 2.0T exhaust and grafted the rear muffler portion into your stock diesel system? Same with the rear valance? The muffler; looks similar in size, does it sound any different!? Nice job, looks like a affordable oem plus, solution! Good job!
Yes, I took a 2.0 turbo system, basically only really need the rear muffler section but it is easiest for install to cut after the first bend as the gas muffler is factory crimped from the muffler out about 4 inches and not round. Next issue is the Diesel exhaust pipe is 2.1" OD and the gas exhaust is 2.3"OD Makes fitting a 2.25" ID Band clamp very difficult. Rear Valance can be bought for $85 bucks, just need the one with the dual opening, stainless tips were 24.99 each. Sound is exactly like stock which is what I wanted. Several people stated the after market exhaust systems had some drone. I drive the TDI from NY to Florida non stop and I absolutely don't want to hear any drone. That was the only reason I went after the factory system, that and I like the balanced look it gives to the car.
Total cost is $205 for my setup.
Break Down:
$60 used exhaust
$85 New rear valence
$10 Stainless Band clamp
$50 Stainless tips
total $205
Being Magnaflow charges $700-750 for their exhaust this was a real bargain
I have a 02 new beetle turbos but I am impressed with a cheaper oem solution, smart and thrifty way to use parts everyone is getting rid of! how do you like your Magnaflow setup and have you done any other upgrades? IIt seems; the Steve Petty Motorsports systems, seem popular right now.
Wow those came out great! Hey I purchased my beetle at the same dealer. You should come out to some Beetle Meets if your local out from Riverhead BullDogger!
Lol I don't look at people that way, if you have passion for the beetle and you want to hangout with others that do please come on down. I run a little Club so you can check out our Facebook page Underdog Motorsports. Come see all the beetle pics and such. We'd love to have you come down and get together. I usually post up meet times and locations on the Facebook site so come check us out!
Quite well, gives you around 185hp and around 330-350 torque. Start up and driving fairly normal yields zero smoke. Mileage is in the low 40's around town. Performance wise it accelerates pretty quick, really shines on the highway when you need to pass no need to drop out of 6th.
Love your, errr, your wife's beetle
The awesome element about our community is our diversity. All ages and backgrounds, coming together, hanging out, and everyone's cool. Can't beat beetle people!
No it is my wife's Beetle I am simply the mod guy. She tells me what she wants and I take care of it.
This is my daily ride. 2009 Toyota X-runner supercharged. The Beetle is just too small for those Wholesale club shopping sprees she likes so much. If I modify my stuff I obviously can't say no to modifying hers
Those 2 Micro products; you have installed on there, look pretty cool! How has your experience been with the extra fuel filter and have you had any issues with the high pressure fuel pump? TDICLUB; seems to have quite a bit of info; on the failure of these. Hopefully, the updated parts from VW; are helping the situation?
That is interesting; how the serpentine belt failure, can take out the timing belt. I haven't hear of this issue, on the gas engines. The quality of the 2 Miro parts; looks amazing! What say you?
No issues with the secondary filtering. No problems with the hpfp. The VW TDI has only about a 1% fail rate and I add lubrication additive every tankful. The beauty of the 2 micron system is that it isolates all the metal particles from an hpfp failure into the filter itself and prevents the spreading of the metal particles through the gas tank lines and pumps. This greatly reduces the costs of any future repair and makes it easier. As far as the timing belt protector, I am not aware of that being a problem on the gas engine motor. It may only have to do with the diesel engines if you accidentally drip or spill diesel fuel on the serpentine belt. My attitude is better safe than sorry. The quality of the 2micron parts is outstanding. The design prevents the hpfp from returning fuel unfiltered into the tank from the high pressure side. The fit and finish are awesome.
The dedication of the Volkswagen aftermarket; never ceases to amaze me (tuning, tdi,.etc.). I don't know; of a aftermarket scene that works so hard; to deal with unintended design consequences of Volkswagen, a brand we all love so much! Its cool; that you have chosen, to upgrade all of these things and create a sense of a safety net, from potential catastrophic failures. It is funny; how at times, owning a Volkswagen and learning about its mechanical idiosyncrasies, are a learning process, of how a catastrophic failure... can seemingly, come out of no where! Sometimes, it reminds me of a Final Destination movie! Bravo, on the upgrades!
