Default The Junkyard Bug

Hello all! I've decided to start a new thread in this section so that everybody gets to see the progress. Long story short, I picked up this Bug at a Junkyard in Aylmer QC, were it had been sitting for over a year. I inquired if it was still for sale and the owner of the place said ''it's still for sale but we were gonna dismantle it next week 'cuz it's been sitting there for at least a year...'' ...So I picked up the next day, motor runs great, no smoke, downpipe is leaking, ignition coil is cracked, but overall mechanicaly sound. This Bug is mostly ''cosmeticaly challenged''. The car needs to be safety checked before it's back on the road.

About the Bug: 1998 NB GLS, 2.0, 5 speed, 233XXXkm, power windows, cruise, a/c, Monster mats!

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

The yellow Bug is the second NB I've owned, here's my first one:

At first I called him ''Dudu'', now I've been calling him ''JB'' (short for Junkyard Bug). Here's JB's new home:

Removing what's left of the original valance:

Picked up a broken valance from the junkyard for free! With what's left of the original one, I'm putting together a custom one:

Wet sanded all the ugly touch-up paint on the hood + test fitting the new custom valance:

Parts I kept from my first NB:

Cleaned up a wheel + inner fender,
Before:

Center caps and bolt covers are from a Golf mk3 I owned once.
After:

Been doing alot of touch-ups with a correct touch-up paint I found at a hobby shop, Testors ''light yellow'' is a near perfect match and a better bargain at $2.25 ea.

So this is were I'm at so far. Girlfriend want's me to take care of the cosmetics first and really clean it up, I agreed and I also prefer to work on a clean car...

Enjoy,

Yann.

I'm glad to see you've put some more life back into this bug! It is looking much better already!!

I bet this bug is so happy to finally be back on the road again instead of scattered into a bunch of pieces everywhere

nice to see that you saved a new beetle, great progress so far, can't get over the HUGE difference in the hood alone! I'm watching this closely, can't wait to see how it turns out... sweet job on the silver one too by the way!

Thanks for all the positive comments! I may have this thing on the road much sooner than later...

Now, since I have limited space in my garage, I have to work on one side at a time, and I started with the driver's side. Check out all that grime and brake dust that accumulated over the years, poor thing probably never had a good wash in many years except for the rain...

I found the best way to get rid of all that brake dust was to wet-sand it with 2000 grit sandpaper, followed with a leveling compound, rubbing compound & Carnuba wax:

I basically had to wet-sand everything that was below the windows; lots of sanding, rubbing and polishing, check that shine:
