Congrats Al! I really can't wait to see Cup again. Sounds like Cuppers will be out of the garage soon, and the Probster will be in it...as soon as the Konis ship!

I'm excited that Cuppers made the list of names! lol She's got so many. lol

Well, post pics as soon as she's ready. I'd love to see tear down pics too..though I hate to see her apart....it would be rather interesting....

Another Saturday in the books. Cup's almost done

Friday was a pain trying to get the alternator off. With coaching help from Dr. Dub, Justin via the phone, some PB blaster and a screwdriver, I was able to pry it out. I've been under the weather for the past 3 days, so I cut things short and called it a night.

Saturday was a good day. Old t-stat out, new one in. Alternator re-installed. the next big pain was removing the bolt that holds the timing belt roller in place. It took an act of congress, some PB blaster and about 30 minutes of soak time to get that bad boy loose and jettison from Cup. The water pump ain't no picnic either. I shot it with some PB blaster and it's soaking for me to tackle Sunday evening. Chances are that Sunday night Cup will be finished, with new doo dads on her and a oil change.

This Cupdate: repair edition, is brought to you by NyQuil. I'm about to take a shot of it and put my head down. Good night.

Cupdate: repair edition- Sunday night

Finally- the home stretch

All old parts are now off of Cuppers including the pain in the rump waterpump.

New water pump in
old pin tensioner removed.
New Timing belt referenced marked from old timing belt.

Install tomorrow evening.

I was hoping to be done tonight, but I wanted to get a definate on how to removing the waterpump. It was difficult to remove and I didn't want to take a chance on jacking Cup's engine. So I waited on further instructions from Dr. Dub- Justin. All is good and i'm excited to get some pavement underneath Cup's wheels. I just hope to be done by the time 24 comes on tomorrow

Hopefully tomorrow will be the final edition of the Cupdate/repair edition.

Wednesday night update:

after triple checking about 10 times to insure TDC and no crank movement, the iming belt is now on. about to put the tenisoner on but getting a final heads up on things from Dr. Dub. That tensioner is a pain in the rump to re-insert the pin, so i'll tackle it tomorrow.

I'm sure I could've gone faster, but being my first time digging into Cup's engine and now wanting to screw a few thousand dollars of engine, I'll take my time and do it right. The next time will be cake

al, go for it.

if you're sure the timing is spot-on, install the pin tensioner and pull it.

turn twice by hand on the crank (clockwise).

then start it after verifying the marks still line up.

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!

SHE'S ALIVE!!!

Thermostat/water pump/ timing belt/tenisoner/roller....INSTALLED!

after a quick jump and a few tries of starting her after over 3 weeks, She's come back to life! She seems to be in time as well- sounding great! I'll go back under the hood and let her run for a bit to double check, then i'll get Cup all reassembled and buttoned up for a nice drive around the city.

Thanks beyond words to Justin/The Cheat for his contribution to this effort as technical advisor. Couldn't have done it without you Obi Wan!

Speaking of.....

Cup has come back to me!!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

I finished up around 11:30p.m. I would've been done sooner, but I had to locate the cooling flange and run-after water pump- i'll be installing them probably tomorrow or Monday depending on how I feel... i need a little down time.

I actually fired up Cuppers last night. she ran fine after some effort to start a car sitting for 3 weeks and with no alternator yet hooked up. So tonight I completed reassembly and started her up. Now I was a bit nervous being I've heard horror stories of folk missing their timing by 1 tooth on the timing belt. Thank God She's running and sounding great with no crappy out of time sound. So I took her for a gentle spin around the neighborhood and back to the house; still runs and sounds great! She does have a CEL, but that was on before- I'll go to AutoZone and have them scan Her and see what's up. It's safe to say that the CEL is not a result of bad timing alignment.

Well I'll blab more tomorrow. We just sprung forward and I lost an hour sleep. Good night!

.....the next day-

Well gang Cup has her stride back and the love has returned.... as if it ever left

I can't express enough my thanks to Justin for his wealth of knowledge and cunning as a certified VW mechanic and owner of Rotors to Motors. Justin was my mechanical advisor through the entire project and nursed me through the steps and even the tricks to make the job smoother..

So today (Sunday) took Cuppers to the self-serve car wash and hosed of 3 weeks of dust and pollen, gave her a good vacuuming out and she's all spiffed up and looking good as well as running like a champ.

As I told Justin, I believe one big key to keeping her in time was not only putting reference marks on the timing belt, but on the crank teeth and corresponding engine block. You see the crank bolt shifted while putting on the timing belt- thankfully not the cam gearing- it stayed at TDC. So all I did was turn the crank bolt back to the reference marks on the block and finished the job. She's money!

Of course this job means you have to put new coolant in. I used Peak any color coolant... Woah, Woah, hold on gang; don't get all worked up. Although you can use the any-color coolants (this is always up for debate), i'm gonna flush this out of Cup Monday night- get any old gunk out of the system. The coolant will be replaced by the OEM G12 to keep Cuppy all happy happy!

Now that we've spung forward, I have more daylight to work with, Soooooooo- pics should be taken this evening

Ahhhhh this is a good beetle day

Yay!!! So glad to hear Cuppers is back!!! We missed her around here. She'll be good once you get some G12 in here too. Good to clean out the system for sure though. Make sure you run water through it until it comes out clear to make sure all of the any color stuff comes out.

Pics Pics Pics Pics Pics Pics Pics

We need Cupper pics!!!
