Thumbs down Worst way to say goodbye

I know it's hard to see but it's a crappy cell photo...

In case you didn't figure it out, I ran into some car problems last night picking up my fiancé from work last night. Complete loss of power, hazards came on and slowly moved over to the shoulder, before the car was done moving I had flames licking my windshield and pooling up in the fuel puddle next to my passenger front wheel. We're both fine but I'm fairly certain I will never see my car again. Hope you had a better New Years Day than I did...

I'm considering taking more crappy cell photos today at the tow yard... I just wasn't looking forward to driving over there in my minivan

OHMYGOD! How horrible!

At least, you are OK. That's what really matters. Keep us posted as to the cause?

Wow very sorry to hear about this. Glad that everyone is ok and that you were able to get out safely!

Got a bunch of photos taken... Both with Amy's cell (much better than mine) and with my camera. I'll be uploading them all later so you guys can see the carnage of fire on plastic... That firewall only lasted barely long enough judging by the hole in my dash...

And Mercury is picking up the car from the tow yard today so maybe I'll get a verdict on the cause soon *fingers crossed*

Don't let my ordeal scare you. As far as I can tell, this is an obscenely rare thing. I bought mine as a lemon and got it back to life years ago. My belief is that either the new fuel pump was faulty or my mechanic messed something up (as minor as didn't fully clamp down a hose after testing).

I enjoyed my Beetle for years and so will you

Sorry to see a nB go down in flames, but I'm glad to hear that you guys were able to get away without any issues.

Strange. I've seen fires in NBs before but they usually start at the fuse box on top of the battery if they happen.

Glad you got out ok! Cars can be replaced, people can't!

Well pretty obvious that the origin started where the fuel line connects the recovery system and the fuel rail.

Unfortunately is does sound like the connection was not tight enough and when pressurized, the spray found something hot in there.

Again just glad you pulled over when you did and were able to take pictures from a safe distance away.

Plenty of late model bugs looking for a good home, should be able to replace it.
