Bah. I posted what happened on our local thread on the Vortex. One of the local VW techs (not at this dealership) who is very well trusted by us all says it sounds like they forgot to put in the oil and my engine seized. He said my best bet is to go back out there, get it started, and just hammer on the gas till the engine blows up.

Otherwise, they'll just throw some oil in it and I'll be lucky if my engine lasts 5k miles.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that, Pete. Hopefully that place will cover the cost of a replacement motor for you.

Just got back from the dealership (again).

Just wanted to make sure I knew it's status before they tried to pull anything on me in the morning.

The dipstick was bone dry. Not a drop of oil in it. The oil cap was loose, hadn't been tightened. So looks like yeah, they forgot to add the oil.

There was also a big redish puddle underneath the rear of where it had been parked when they were done with the service. There's another smaller puddle under the rear of the car where it's parked now.

I did manage to get it started again, but the second you let off the gas it dies. And now the pavement behind the exhaust is covered in an oily dark mess.

Sad to hear, what happened to your Bug...
If the mechanic really forget to put oil in the motor, it was very bad mistake!!

I suppose that they should double-check that kind of things!

I hope that your Bug will recover soon, and hopefully you don´t have to pay anything for it...

Won't start, kinda like the battery is dead.

Thinking maybe after draining the oil, they forgot to put in the new oil? Would that somehow cause it to stall out so often and be hard to start as if the battery were dieing?

Kinda worried.

Oh no! Did Hopper make any noises as he was stalling?

Not really. He pretty much would just die the second I took my foot off the gas.

When he was running though, he just didn't sound right at all. Kinda like he'd been sitting in sub zero weather for a year.

Crap! Somehow when I posted last I started out on the page before this one so I hadn't seen all the pics and the other posts. I was going to say it sounded like the engine seized Dumbass VW techs!
What are they doing for you? If need be, they better be getting Hopper a new engine!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I called first thing this morning, sat on hold for awhile, was told the rep was with a customer.

After about 10 minutes she told me he was looking at it now and would call me back in a few minutes. That was over an hour and a half ago.

Last night I was thinking I'd give them two choices. 1.) If they really felt it was ok, then I want them to warranty it for the life of the car. If a blow a head, they fix it. If I start leaking oil, they fix it. If I'm stupid and pour anti-freeze into the oil, they fix it. I don't think they'll like that option. 2.) They replace the engine with a brand new one.

This morning I'm thinking there really are no options. I think they're only choice really is to replace the engine. While that's the safest bet, I'm still worried. If they can't even remember to put the oil in the car, how well are they going to do an engine swap? So I'm going to want some type of warranty there as well.

From all my experience sitting on customer calls where customers are VERY unhappy about mistakes our transcriptionists make, I also came up with something else I want them to do.

1.) I want to know exactly how this happened. What was missed, how they were able to let something so simple slip by.
2.) I want to know what changes they, as a dealership, are going to make to insure this never happens again to another customer.

Oh, and I'm also wondering if I should demand a refund for the service they did yesterday. I basically paid $442.00 for them to kill my engine.

I def would want that $ back. And you should get it back. It's ridiculous if they don't refund it. If they don't it's like they're making you pay for part of whatever they do to fix this stupid mistake they made. And I would def push for the warranty.

Skittle had a new transmission put in her a few years ago I'm noticing her bucking a bit coming out of second and sometimes third and I'm wishing I would have gotten some sort of warranty on that. A don't drive her far so a transmission shouldnt go bad in less than 4 years. dammit.

Good luck, Pete and keep us posted!

Ok, I just heard from the dealership. It’s official, the engine is shot.

He said there definitely was no oil in it. They filled it up, it started up, they let it run and it was doing fine. As soon as they gave it some gas, when it hit 2000 RPM the oil pressure dropped. They pulled the oil pan and there was a mess. Said there’s definitely internal engine damage and it needs a new engine. They are calling their insurance agent now to see what to do now. I asked if this would be a new engine or used, he said he didn’t know.

I told him I take great care of this car. It has low miles, never had a problem, and that from no fault of mine, my engine is now trashed, and I will not accept anything but a new engine. That even with that, considering they failed to do a simple oil change, I’m worried about their ability to do an engine swap. And that a used engine will only make that feeling of uneasiness worse.
