Yeah it ran pretty hot with the FMIC in there. I live on a dirt road so I have to drive slowly for 3-4 minutes right after getting off the highway and it was getting hot so I beefed up the cooling by adding an oil cooler and an OEM 1.8T radiator.

I noticed quite a bit of extra oil pressure after I added the cooler so it is definitely helping a lot to keep the oil from thinning out.

Choice!!!
It's great seeing new life coming back to the ol buggy Jordan. Good news indeed.

Do you think you'll have some road time with it before the cold season settles in? I hope so man.

Nice progress man. Which engine code is that? Any details on the motor? I hope you threw in some aftermarket rods at least in there while motor was out.

I have rods here for it but I'm just running the stock engine and chipping it for now. The 2.0T blowing up left a bad taste in my mouth. I have rods here for it now and when I rebuild it and put a bigger turbo on in the future I'll throw them in.

It's an AWW I think.

Forgot to post up. I got the car back a little over a week ago, 3 months to the day after it blew.

I gave it a good cleaning inside and out and put it away for the year.

Glad to hear you got it back and sorry to hear you really didn't get to enjoy it before putting it away. You guys have snow already? I've been lucky enough not to get hit yet, but the east coast got some already.

Thanks! No snow yet but the temperatures have dipped below freezing a few times at night so all it will take is for some precipitation to come along one night and we'll get hit. The roads are salted already in some places. Bridges, overpasses, etc.

Looking forward to next year though, even though my Aircooled project is stealing a lot of my attention now.

If you wait long enough to name something it will name itself. Thought of "Project Hot Mess" the other day and it seemed fitting.

Quote:
Hot Mess

When ones thoughts or appearance are in a state of disarray but they maintain an undeniable attractiveness or beauty.
The 1.8T swap was pretty much a success but there are several underlying problems:

1) The car is running a narrowband ECU and we didn't realize until near the end how limiting this was. I'm running a hardware 180hp engine with 150hp software with basically zero room to grow without a wideband swap. I know there are things I CAN do but I didn't do this much work to frig around with overpriced APR tunes and 4 bar fuel pressure regulators.

2) The interior took one hell of a beating from being taken in and out over and over to chase down wiring gremlins. I have about half of the parts I need to fix this but as you guys know VW decided to use a really delicate soft touch finish on their dash panels and the two used ones I've bought so far just aren't suitable I'll probably have to buy one new.

3) The car has trouble boosting, then over boosts and smells like burning pretty much all the time.

4) The key doesn't work the trunk anymore, I need to do the adaptation which is easy I just need to steal my friend's VAG-COM one of these days. The hatch is shaved and the trunk popper button is broken so this is really, really annoying with a trunk-mounted battery and air ride.

5) The ABS.. What a mess... I have a hanging plug for the non-existent ASR button behind the dash. I also need to track down the proper ABS controller. The 2.0Ls and early TDI's didn't have any kind of traction control and there's about a billion part numbers out there for them. I'm sure when I get the proper ABS controller installed something else will get pissed off and throw a code. MK4 troubleshooting is like playing whack-a-mole.

6) The air ride compressor died the day I put it into storage. I still need to get that fixed before I can put the car on blocks and cover it. The car is immobilized sitting in storage on its face now and I can't get a jack under it.

Some good news:

The car didn't get one scratch on it the entire 3 months it sat outside. This is really amazing and I can't think the mechanic who did the swap enough for being super careful. I was up almost every week to give the car a wash so it didn't do too bad. I only ended up with two small bird etchings and I already picked up some compound to fix those in the spring. The body modules are now all communicating and everything is working. The car was in panic / recovery mode for a while and it was doing all kinds of crazy things that you'd probably want a car that was upside down and submerged in water to do.. The BBS's didn't corrode (or get stolen!) when they were sitting outside. The aluminum sealer I used worked amazingly.

Oh and one more thing... The car isn't an 8V anymore!! Thank god.

I'm not sure what I'm doing performance-wise for next year. I have a set of rods for it and I'd love to get a F23 Frankenturbo for it but I'd probably be happy with a properly working chipped K03S setup though. I just need to get a turbo that isn't messed. I'll probably end up building an engine for it on the side and then drop it in once I finish squashing bugs that will probably pop up next year after running it for a bit.

I picked up a K04 turbo (15,000kms on it), GIAC K04 chipped ECU, injectors, TT MAF for under $900 to my door.

Looking forward to getting the car back on the road in 6 weeks or so!
