Default Daughter's Ride

My oldest of 4 daughters is getting her driver's license in a few weeks. Since I'm not going to let her drive the new '06 NB Vert just yet, she can drive the '06 Honda CRV SE 4WD ... Nighthawk Black Pearl, black leather interior with Honda stainless trim kit, 17" ASA wheels with Yokohama tires, Honda fog lights, Honda roof rack cross bars, and polished exhaust pipe. Or, if she wants to feel real safe, she can drive my wife's Yukon XL.

Happy Motoring ...

Those are all very nice rides. Welcome to the org! I'm bothered a little about your comment that your daughter (presumably a new driver) will feel "extra safe" driving a Yukon. One would feel "extra safe" driving a tank too, but I'd be more concerned about the safety of people around her. I'd never give a new driver something like that to drive, "to feel extra safe." I think there's no logic in it, or at least very little social responsibility. Just my 2c.

Please ignore my poor attempt at humor ...

she loves driving the CRV and hates driving the Yukon XL! It's too darn big for her!!! It's our necessary family vehicle when hauling all 4 daughters and a black lab around ... or driving thru a Chicago blizzard ...

Sorry I didn't get your joke You'd be surprised how many people seriously think that way. Having a small-to-medium size car myself, I'm naturally fearful of the "tank-driver mentality"

Your daughter is so lucky. At 19, I had to buy my own first car, a 10 year old (at the time) $450 junker.

Of course, I now have my dream car, 'tho........

We're probably wandering off the subject of the forum, but here's my take on the subject ...

#1
Don't blame the kids ... blame the parents who supposedly raised them to be responsible members of the human race ...

#2
Immature kids don't have to be in a large SUV to act stupid ... any vehicle will work. Here's an example ...

We just had 2 teenagers racing along at 100 MPH on one of the main streets here over the Memorial Day weekend in new, matching "fast and furious" type of cars that their parents had just recently bought them. Someone pulled out in front of one of them, not realizing they were driving at such ridiculous speeds. To make a long story short, there ended up being a 4 car collision, killing one of the teenagers, and seriously injurying a todler.

The moral of the story ... it's all a matter of raising and training your kids to act responsible, and getting them experienced behind the wheel of a car they are comfortable with.

Similar stuff has been happening in Toronto with startling frequency. The most recent one left a soon-to-be wed couple close to death The public outcry was so bad they're introducing new legislation that's very tough on street racers. But where there's idiots and horsepower...

I wish I had as nice a car as that as my first. I did get to drive my parent buick electra 225 but my first car was an Audi fox 1974 with a sunroof and ruuuusstyyy.

Dyned, I do like your choice of rides!

My 1st car (back in the mid 70's) was a fire engine red 1969 Dodge Polara 2-door, with a 383 c.i. V8. The thing was probably as long as my wife's current Yukon XL ... and probably got about the same gas mileage. Certainly wasn't my first choice, but the price was right ... I inherited it from my parents.

I haven't checked yet, but if there isn't a forum for "first rides", maybe we should start one!

I see that, we'll have to get together. Scarab (Gus) lives up in Lindenhurst. I met him at a show in Naperville.

Ellen,

Silver04 is Gus; Scarab 1 is Steve and he lives in Wheaton, IL.

I think we should have an Illinois GTG at the Ikea in Schaumburg one day. I hear that IKEA and NBs go well together. I'm trying to convince the GM at Gurnee VW to have a show in their parking lot soon. I will let you all know.

Soccerbug,

Your CRV is very nice and tastefully done with the ASA wheels. A friend of mine has a CRV; they drive very nicely and are quite comfortable.

Thanks very much ... it just didn't look right staying stock. On the otherhand, I didn't want to go overboard with many changes either.

Looking forward to meeting all the suburban Chicago NBers sometime. We will definitely need to get together for a Bug cruise out in the country ... maybe up to Lake Geneva for a lunch on the lake ...

Ellen,

That's ok; you can take the bag off your head now. Just show me where to get and how to install the clear corners like you did on your car and all will be forgiven.

Man, those Audi Foxes were tough to keep together in one piece under the best of circumstances. Baling wire, chewing gum, crazy glue and rubberbands were standard items to be kept in the trunk. The VW Fox was even worse!
