Default SMG's New Beater - 1991 Toyota Tercel

I know it's nothing special, but as soon as I rolled onto the lot there's something I liked about this car.

I was winter beater shopping and I wanted something reliable that wasn't too nice to drive through the winter. I knew if I bought another VW I'd fall in love with it and it would become another project car, which my NB has become. The car had to be reliable enough to get from point A to point B without a hiccup while being a car that wouldn't bring the modding bug knocking.

So, here it is in all it's glory, my new Tercel:

As much as I would have loved a VW, the older ones just aren't as reliable as a Toyota and for some reason, all the old VW's that I've been able to look at weren't in good shape, had rusty floors, sketchy trannies, etc.

The Tercel is automatic so my girlfriend can drive it and I can just cruise around a little bit easier (although it won't be as fun as a manual).

So, obviously my NB is getting parked this winter in an underground heated parking lot.

She's finally getting the love she deserves.

I would love, love, love, to park my TS in a heated garage, and drive a winter beater. Congrats!

Ok! So I was driving yesterday, and guess what? My muffler fell off. :P

I dragged it for a block till I got home and I fixed it up until I get a new exhaust on tomorrow.

There's a few rust spots coming out from the salt this winter, but from April to December it'll be sitting doing nothing, so it'll be a bit of a project car.

^ I'm sorry, but the use of duct tape there is awesome I think you should keep it like that.

Hahaha! I've been laughing at it too, it's been my desktop pic since I took it, maybe the best picture I will ever take.

My first car was a '95 Tercel that my parents got for me for $450. It had about 180k miles on it when I got it. Now my dad drives it around since I got my Beetle and it has welllll over 200k on it and runs great!

Haha, thanks guys!

Got it fixed (kinda) today for $140. New muffler and over-axle pipe installed. My cat and flex pipe are cracked and ready to go, but to replace those would have been an extra $350 that I just can't justify spending on the beater with the supercharger project ongoing.

I'll fix it next fall before inspection though.

My friend has a 90-something [I know specific, right] Tercel, and he has no Tach! He has to play it all 'by ear'...I think his Speedo will go out every now and again, but he loves that thing to death!

SMG, lovin' the duct tape...
