Default EVZBUG's 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Well, I finally did it and bought a Porsche 911 a couple of months ago. It is a 1996 993 series 911 Carrera Cabriolet. It is classic Guards red with Cashmere tan leather, and it had 20k miles on it when I bought it--that's right twenty thousand miles! For those of you who don't know, the 993 generation 911 was built from 1993-1998, and is a serious classic because it marked the last of the air-cooled Porsches. My car sounds like a sporty air-cooled Beetle, and has much more in common with the original Beetle than the New Beetle! It has floor-hinged pedals, it has a flat-six (two more cylinders than a Bug), old-fashioned rain channels, and if you look at the two halves of the door latch--the one on the door and the one on the b-pillar, they are the same as a Karmann Ghia. In fact, last weekend, I was at a small VW GTG, and got to take a look at a Karmann Ghia, and the parts really are the same! The 993 is actually already a collectible, and they tend to go for more than early examples of their water-cooled replacement, the 996, and my car is actually *a*preciating!

I'm trying to keep the car very original, and so far, I have factory HIDs and factory European springs that lower the car. The only aftermarket parts are the Bilstein HD coilvers, but can you believe, the car CAME with coilovers from the factory? I also have 18" 993 RS Speedline wheels that are being refurbished--these are ultra-rare and ultra-collectible, and came on the ultra-desirable 993 RS. I plan on adding an RS rear spoiler and RS front splitters, and calling it a day.

I was planning on getting an Eos 3.2L VR6, but I've wanted a Porsche since I was a kid, and I already have two VWs. With prices starting to go up on all air-cooled 911s, I figured I'd go all the way and get the Porsche and get a less expensive VW in the future, say a Jetta TDI. Oh, and thanks for NYBugman for his 911 advice.

Don't worry, the Bug is going nowhere! I even got matching plates--the Bug has had EVZBUG for a while, and the 911 has EVZ911!

BTW, that's me, and the picture was taken BEFORE I had the lower OEM European springs installed.

Those 17" wheels are just the basic one step up from the standard wheel--nothing special. Most 993s have them. In fact, it's rare to see the standard 16" wheel. You should see the ones that I bought for the car. They are 993 RS wheels--they only made 1100 993 RS's.

This is a 993 series 911 RS (Renn Sport). It's a car that you can drive to work and race on the weekend. They were not imported to the U.S., and one would cost $150k or more.

That was the Club Sport Edition. This is the Comfort Edition. It has a smaller spoiler and splitters. Both versions have a bigger 3.8L engine, lightweight door cards, manual windows, no back seat, etc. That smaller spoiler is probably going on my car.

And finally, these are the 3-piece Speedline wheels that say "Speedline for Porsche" on the lip. They are being refurbished, and will be ready in a few days.
