Metropolitans were imported from England, originally badged as "Hudson" Metropolitans then badged Nash Metropolitans, then finally as an AMC product. They were built from 1954 to 1961, having a 95,000+ model production run through the entire series. Minor upgrades were made, but interchangeability throughout the entire 7 year production run is nearly complete. In a 1957 dated Motor Trend evaluation, a model was run for something like 48 hours with regular stops for fuel/inspection at an average speed of around 55 miles an hour and an average fuel economy of 42mpg if I recall correctly. The MG and Austin Healy 4 cylinders proved durable and reliable- throughout its run it had both. Originally: a unibody car, one of the first mass-produced unibody economy cars. The entire internal structure has been removed and rebuilt to accomodate a ladder style 2x3 heavy wall box tube chassis, incorporating a fully adjustable, tubular armed triangulated 4-link rear with Ford 8.8 rear end equipped with 3.73 gears and Ford Racing Products posi. At the front is a heavily modified and narrowed tubular A-Armed Mustang II derived suspension with manual rack and pinion steering and disc brakes. Drivetrain includes a '93 vintage 4.3 rollercam V6 with a base output of 220 hp, upgraded with an Edelbrock 4 barrel intake, an Holley 450 4 barrel high output HEI, serpentine underdrive pulleys, and custom equal length headers and dual 2" exhaust running through Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers. Transmission is an NVG 3500 5 speed out of a 2000 model pickup with a performance oriented Centerforce clutch and hydraulic throwout bearing. Wheels are 14x8 inch rear mounting 215/60/14 Goodyear Eagle GT's, and the front wheels are 14x4 running 175/70/14 Goodyear Eagles. The gauge is a 5 in 1 unit from Haneline. Steering wheel is a Billet Specialties "Saturn" model I think it's called, with a custom sprint car style quick release hub. Originally I had purchased an Avic N1 DVD/CD/MP3/GPS navigation unit for it but I never put it in it. I am considering putting that in the Mustang, since that car gets driven more, and just putting a regular Pioneer CD player in it. Interesting point of fact: the fully assembled chassis was at the shop awaiting the mounting of the freshly painted body when a Factory Five AC Cobra was delivered next door- complete sans drivetrain. Inspection of that car on the lift showed we had inadvertently created a nearly identical, slightly scaled down chassis, haha. I need to get some better pictures of it- I realized that one didn't have the trim on it where the two colors come together. BTW, the yellow on it that I chose is Volkswagen Sunflower Yellow! ![]() |

A Metropolitan is my dream car as well. I thought I had one cornered then it disappeared.

Digging the metro for sure. We saw one about 20 years ago at a good guys show sporting a big block, and that got us hooked. I like you're set up much better. Plenty of power for an 1800# car and not as "in your face" as some I've seen.
Very cool rod ![]() There were some changes in the metro durning it's run. Engine size went from 1200cc's to 1500. Also the addition of an exterior trunk lid. The hood bulge went away.

Yes, a trunk lid would have been nice on my year, although with the modifications it is now a 2 seater with a sort of package tray instead of a backseat. Not that the backseat was all that roomy to begin with. We hunted for years for a hood with the hump- the '58's did not have one. I think the hood is from a '54. |
