and now, the backstory of this car (or so i've been told) now updated:

the mileage on the cluster means nothing. the car has 362,000 miles on the original engine. yesssss...i kid you not. i dunno if that's good or bad...

i got the stickers at my vw dealer, if anyone wants one (kitty ), i'll see if they have any more.

more pics!

i need to drop the coils a LOT, but even full up, they make the car handle MUCH better. i also had installed a stage2 clutch kit as the original failed hardcore. while that was installed, a new transmission mount was put into service as well.

also, i decided to try my hand at making a custom exhaust for the car as well. not that i disliked the autotech, but i sold it for a tidy sum, so i was back to the factory pipe with no muffler and no way to put one on. so...i acquired a used mk4 gli muffler, a tdi midpipe, and an obx header. the end result is a near-factory look (if the po hadn't cut the valance off-center, it'd look intentional) with a quiet, authoritive sound. there's no leaks, it uses all factory mounts and hangers, and cost me well under $100 to make.

new front lca's were installed when i did the coils as well, i tried to capture the cool pink paint job i did on them, but the shadow wasn't having it. i also did rear bushings upon coilover installation.

i still don't have a euroswitch or clear bananas yet, i'm apparently really slacking, but to spend $50 on cosmetic mods is a fail when $50 damn near made the catback.

the next round of modifications will involve not so much speed, but replacing worn factory parts (like my cluster!) with new oem stuff. i sourced a gti 20th anni cluster brand new on the cheap, so that will find its way in soon. my current cluster does not light up at night most times, i have traced it to a bad circuit board. we plugged in the 20th cluster (but didn't turn on the car!), flipped on the lights, and it light up awesome, so i bought it.

i may also do chrome moldings, jury is out on those. i'd like to fix the bumpers first (which may negate the bumper moldings anyways), so that may be a down-the-line mod.

without further adieu...

oil burning is starting again.

time to build a motor up.

ordered 83.5mm pistons for the 2.0 block, these will clear a 5th valve.

dug my passat aeb head out of storage, searching for revolver cams with as high a duration as possible. this head already has ferrea valvetrain components, revving to 7500rpm+ should not be an issue.

the bottom end is already fortified with scat rods and a knife-edge crank, those will stay. i rebuilt the bottom end for my friend at 32k miles to take 18psi, it did and well. pistons are just stock though, those will need to go in the dump.

bought the 20v exhaust manifold flange from 034 with some piping as well. there isn't an na version stateside, so i'm just going to make my own manifold/header thingy.

trying to source a tt225 intake manifold so the throttle is on the proper side.

buddy is making me new gauge faces in the sport style with a 7500rpm redline (read: none).

all this together with a proper tune will yield 170+whp i hope.

transmission is to be determined, but i do have a gearbox with a 3.65fd, .92 4th, and .68 5th. should produce plenty of economy and power. the thought has crossed my mind to do a 6spd swap, but i'm dumping $2k into the motor already.

need a block with squirters...

well, not much to report here except that i've been driving a lot still.

took it to boston to go see xxrockyhorrorsxx and pick up dub parts, good times.

they sent me 83mm pistons, that's ok, the block i got didn't need a lot taken off to be true again.

installed a rear tie bar, i don't know, it looks cool, that's about it. i think it makes the ass end a little tighter, but mainly the big thing is that it looks cool and i can feed my harnesses through there.

splurged a bit and bought the last set of 15x8 snowflake reps in 5x100. got some spacers and bolts, we're good to go once my tires show up. i searched far and wide, and FINALLY found a tire in 225/50/15 that i liked (yokohama es100).

why wouldn't i stretch those you ask? well, 350whp is not gonna do well with stretch, i want to put the power down, not make smokeshows.

motor is together, but not running well on 9:1 cr and no turbo installed (need a better intake manifold without cracks).

some may have noticed i was planning on going na...well, i tripped, slipped, and fell into a gt30r.

oh well, some new-ish pics from my old phone...

the final piece of the puzzle showed up today.

i ordered a tdi 6speed transmission from Bora Parts with the updated shift fork, and i got a call from estes that it had shown up at the depot. took the li'l green hauler up there and scooped it, pallet and all!

i was able to part out a tt over the weekend, and in doing so, got EVERYTHING else (it was a 1.8t). clutch only had 10k miles as well, so i figured why the heck not (at least for the eurospec/fidanza flywheel).

so as we sit here with this bottle of rally cola from stop&shop, i can say this: this has been the quickest, easiest project i've done in a while. most of my projects take months or years to complete, so this was refreshing.

i'm hoping by december 1 to have the motor and transmission in, then tuned by the following month on boost. by april 1st, 2010, i want to have it reliable at 14psi.

it needs to get done by december 1 (the install), because on december 2, i have a MAJOR project and a 45-day deadline.

gonna need some new seats, so i stumbled across some red/black sport cloths on ebay from a gti.

i don't know what model gti they go to (they aren't recaros, just big bolstered sports), but hey, they look cool and do the job.

front/back should run me under $300.
