Regardless, it's a totally awesome thing to have that car!

Mine tranny was an FMX (cruisomatic). It was a 3 speed auto BUT, if you put the shift selector where "drive" would be on any other car, That would start you out in 2nd gear (for snow) so you had to put the selector in between where "drive" and "low" would be. Is that the same one you have? From what you're describing, it does sound like maybe the vaccuum line is disconnected/plugged/something. There is also a vaccuum modulator that the vaccuum line is connected to (next to the tranny pan) some are adjustable and some aren't, that could also be bad. But if it shifts into 3rd but slips really bad, thats a whole diff story.
on a diff note, I spotted this 65 caliente at the gas station tonight but only had my camera phone...wish I could have gotten a better one for ya.

Nah, if I had a picture I would. Basically it's set up something like P R N D L, if I remember correctly. I'll have a look at the vacuum lines and mod. Thanks for the picture!

Sweet rides! I'm partial to the Comet, Mustangs are a dime a dozen around my neck of the woods. Everybody wants one. I see 'em quite a bit.
There's a fastback in my subdivision I see every day.

There was a Comet Cyclone w/427 & Marauder Park Lane on Speed channel today, The My Classic Car show.
The Maurader was a nice 4-door cruiser, black. The doors were off of a Galaxie with bolt on chrome stuff.

my classic car episode 14

Wow nice! Sorry I haven't been online. College is kicking my ass.
No one around here has a classic mustang. Let alone a Comet,
I loooove the black.

You have 2 VERY sweet rides. I drove a '66 coupe with the cruise-o-matic my senior year in HS. Loved that car, but mine was a POS, nothing like yours. And had several after that (5 or 6 I think) including a '70 Mach 1. And my wife had a 64 comet just like yours a few years ago.

Oh and the chrome on the side was optional.

VERY SWEEEEEEET RIDES!!!!

That's not entirely true. There seems to be no real definite rhyme or reason to what mustangs the factory installed the fake side scoops on. What I've found over the years is that the 6 cylinder cars tend to be hit and miss more so than the V8 cars. I have had a 1966 mustang 6 cyl. with them and I had a 66 V8 without them I do know though, that no factory GT coupe or convertibles came without them and no fast backs came with them at all. If you see a fastback with them, someone added them. If you see a coupe or convertible with a GT package, either it is not a true GT or someone added them.
The Pony interior was an interior upgrade and was seen mostly on the 289 HI PO cars and convertibles and of course the GTs.

Sorry if TMI...

Also check Ford Ranchero, Ford Falcon, Ford Fairlane, Ford Torino, Mercury Comet, and Mercury Montego Parts Online for the comet stuff.
I've delt with both of these in the past and had good dealing and high quality with both

A lot of info, but useful. My brother and I were trying to distinguish a difference. Didn't really matter, but its like a fun-fact kind of thing.

I know, I get sucked into the whole "I have to know" thing even though it doesn't matter.
And it bothered me to no end that some had them and some do not. They did the same thing in 1965. The 64.5 didn't offer them at all. So I had people telling me that my 1966 wasn't a 1966 it was a 1964.5 because it didn't have them.
