Great pics!! What a fantastic story. So glad you are carrying on the tradition and having your own VW love affair. I'm sure your late parents would be delighted
Keep us updated on the license plate details! We would love to know the story behind that, too. |

My story is similar but Dad did 7 beetles and one bus. He owned the 2nd VW registered in Tulsa County Oklahoma. That was 1954.
I bought my first VW in 2008, 8 years after we lost Mom and Dad. Dad loved German cars and would have really liked the NBs. Thanks for posting your story. Brought back some great memories. Nice looking GLX you have. Post more pics when you can.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I have been told that my parents had several beetles before I was born and I'm sure there are some old pictures floating around here somewhere...
I have asked the DMV on more than one occasion about the plates and it was issued so long ago that the computer doesn't go back that far. Apparently, they have to dig into the Springfield archives for possible clues. For those of you who missed my other thread, I bought my Silver 2000 GLX about a month ago and just got it out of the shop two days ago. Reason being, the previous owner neglected just about all recommended maintenance (except oil changes) on the car including timing/accessory belts, water pump, rear seal, and the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate was shot. Also had to have the flex pipe (exhaust) repaired and there was a leaking coolant housing/flange. On a positive note, the interior is truly immaculate and I couldn't have ordered a better set of equipment myself, including the cold weather package for right now...haha...The car really moves out well now and keeping my foot off it to help reduce fuel costs may prove a challenge ![]() This coming week will be my first real test of work commuting with everything repaired. I drive about 80 miles round trip at least three to four days per week so the miles will pile on quickly not even including weekends. I'm hoping nothing major will have to be done for at least another 60K miles. I'm thinking about extra boost/temp/volt gauges next when it warms up a bit and not really sure what else besides that. Just glad to finally have this guy on the road after waiting for seemingly forever. Incidentally, the tech suggested that I run only synthetic oil due to the 1.8T. Any thoughts? Thanks! M |

Figures, got my NB out of the shop last Friday, got to drive it over the weekend, to work on Mon/Tues, then the snow hit, and I've barely driven it since! Reason being, was completely snowed in all day Weds and most of Thurs. Will venture out today but will most like take the other vehicle (also have Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4). Was a little surprised of how well these drive in the snow although the previous owner did tell me as such.
Got a call from the DMV a few days ago and unfortunately they are not able to confirm the original issuance date of the plates. Reason being, their micro-fiche only go back so far (didn't tell me how far) and I'm guessing 50 years back is now considered insignificant. Dad was born in 1921, was in WWII, and I'm not really sure when they got their first car but I'm guessing after the war which would be somewhere around mid-40's to early 50's. Pretty sure mom told me at one time that that was the only plate they ever had and they were always a one-car family. So my conservative estimate would be 55+ years for that same 5-digit plate in the family. The cool thing is, even though it would be considered a vanity plate by today's standards, I still only have to pay the standard fee since it was issued so long ago ![]() |
