Yes, that is a VW Thing. Really!

That one looks to be in great shape. In my days, I have seen many.

Historically, based upon the "Kübelwagen" or "bucket seat car" used in WWII; saw service in all theaters of the conflict, especially good in africa without the need for water!

Volkswagen Kübelwagen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "thing" wasn't imported to the usa that long; although it seems it was continued to be made in Mexico... just like the aircooled beetles...

Volkswagen 181 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Later they made a VW Jeep; I saw these in military use when I was in Germany....

Volkswagen Iltis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I still think; the coolest vehicle of all time was the "Schwimmwagen" 4 wheel drive and swims too... what else do you need?

Volkswagen Schwimmwagen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amazing site for this very cool and go anywhere car!

Kind of the German counterpart/predecessor to the HMMWV (Humvee), Daddy to the Hummer!

Get out! No $hit! Restored, restorable, for sale? Almost bought a restored one when they could be had for $15k-$20. I'd trade my Vette for the right one! That or a '63 Vert Bird Vert Sports Roadster Package, full power options, a/c, spinner wire wheels, and the M-code engine option, 390 ci with 3 Holley dueces. Should have bought one instead of the Vette, or hell I could of bought both, and they would be worth more than I paid for them in the 11 years.

Love...

M.

Sorry Mo, I should've been more specific.

The car I saw in be back yard was a thing. It was in real good shape. Looked like it was just sitting around for a while.

Gorgeous Thing.
I believe the Iltis was used by the Canadian Army and still can be found up there in the Great White North.

I read that in WWII German general Erwin Rommel drove a Thing (Kubelwagen) through a desert and discovered without realizing it that he was driving straight through a minefield.

But the Kubelwagen was too light to set off the mines, so it saved his life. Fun fact

I've got pics of the Kubelwagen. It won best of show at Bugfest in the Chicago are earlier this year. Plus I saw it earlier at a WWII reenactment at the Illinois Railway museum.
