Default Trunk Light

Anyone know where the switch is for the trunk light on a 98 beetle? Mine does not work and after going through everything I found that the P O had disconnected the connection in the deck lid. When I plug it back in the trunk light will not go out so I am assuming it must be a bad switch. Thanks.

I have a 99 beetle and the truck light doesn't come on. Neither does the trunk-open indicator in the dashboard. Here is the information I found that should solve my problem and hopefully it'll be helpful to you as well.

Default Updated:Trunk Light Problem

Ok I figured out my problem. I plugged the wiring back in and the light came on, when I close the deck lid it stays on. I opened the deck lid and closed the latch with the lid up and the light went out. I called the dealer and found out that you cannot replace just the switch you have to replace the entire latch for $42.00.
I pulled the latch and cleaned and greased it but still no good. I finally figured out that the latch was not closing all of the way, the latch has two clicks on it and it was only going past one. The only thing I could find was a rubber stop on the latch itself that was stopping the lid from going all the way down. I removed the latch cover and pulled the rubber stop off and now it works great. I even had problems with the deck lid not closing completely before but now it is rock solid. BTW my car is a 98

Cool

Outstanding description of the solution. Kudos to you on your "self-repair".

Nice work.

I just wonder, rather than entirely removing the rubber stopper, if shaving it down a couple mm's would be better. I just wonder how much that may aid in keeping tension on the latch once closed. Any new rattles?
