whats that noise?
ok.
i've got a '01 1.8t and when i start up it makes a strange noise almost like a belt rubbing. but i think ith the air pump, i looked at it and one of the rivits is coming out. what is up with that. i'm worried about it, so if any of you has had it happen or have any idea please don't be shy

Noise when starting
Have a similar noise when starting my 01 with a 2.0. Have heard several reasons for the noise. Mind has to do with the starter, so I'm told. Have heard from others on the forum that have cleaned or replaced the starter but noise continues. I'll post what happens to mind after its starter is replace next week.

no
this noise starts after about 3 or 4 seconds after starting and lasts for about 10 seconds

personally i think it is a worn-out air pump
