Default AC Problems

My ac just quit blowing cold air today. It is a 2002 Turbo S with 45000 miles on it. It should not be having this problem already in my eyes. Anyway my manual said that it could be a fuse blown. I can not find which fuse it is and my book does not tell me either. Any help from someone would be great. I am a die hard Ford man that changed to a Beetle. Did I make a mistake?

Thanks Scott from Kentucky

Look in the fuse box on top of the battery, the first fuse will be completely melted if there's a problem with the fans, mine died around the same mileage, seems to be a common problem.

It seems that you are right. The first fuse was melted really bad. I am going to replace it today. Thanks for the help.

I would suspect the fan motor bearing going out causing it to rub on the shroud, mine was the drivers side fan that went bad.

That fuse is such a common problem, I'm surprised VW hasn't been forced to recall the car and replace...something. The fuses, the fuse box, the fans...I dunno. It seems that in a majority of cases, when someone's A/C quits working, it's because that fuse has blown and the fans don't come on. Frankly, I'm surprised there haven't been some car fires attributed to this. As far as I understand fuses, when more amperage goes through than the fuse is designed to handle, the little metal filament breaks (melts I guess) and power flow is interuppted. In the Beetle's case, it seems the fuse completely melts down, sometimes melting the fuse box as well.
