Default trunk/hatch won't open all the way by remote

I cannot get my hatch to open without standing right there and pulling it up right after I press the key fob or right after pulling the driver's side door button. If I don't catch the lip right away the hatch won't open all the way.

There are two distinct movements. The first happens, but if I don't pull the hatch before the second sound it won't open. It is loose, and the only solution is to press the button again and lift it manually.

Because of this problem, I cannot use the interior button unless someone else is with me. Is there an easy fix?

Cheers

Yeah, when you use the remote, be right there and catch it, or when you use the button on the door, have your windows closed, press hte button and close the door. the air pressure will pop it up.

There are tabs on the side of that hatch that can be adjusted, but that didn't work for me.

I thought the problem used to be boot lids that were difficult to close because of the spring which assists in the opening of the boot was too strong to allow easy closing. The fix was to do something or other with the spring which is under the latch on the boot lip - maybe someone has taken too much pressure off and this is preventing the boot popping up.

it does seem that people either have trunks that dont open, or dont close right. Guess vw just didn't find the right balance.

Well, I've been neglecting this little annoyance for years now.

"ptmlinh", who is very nice, and I have been swapping PMs over this and I finally just got off my butt today and did it.

Acquire (read: buy, steal, trade etc.) a T-30 Torx driver and loosen the fastener holding the black rubber bumper on each side channel of the hatch. Move the bumpers about 1/4" towards you and tighten firmly.

Mine now "pops" out fine...

I'm having the same problem, and I just located my torx drivers last night. I'll have to adjust it and see if it works for me.

I've also heard this problem can occur due to the hatch release motor starting to wear out. Has anyone ever heard that before or replaced the motor as a fix?

Soooo...anybody have success with the 'adjustment'?

Anyone have any pics of the exact locations of the "fastener holding the black rubber bumper on each side channel of the hatch"?

On my '99 it's located just below where the air struts anchor to the body...

Is the hatch supposed to open with the handle under the swivel VW logo? Cause when I lift up on the handle I can hear a microswitch clicking, but nothing happens. ANd yes, the car is unlocked.

I've never tried that.

On another note, I removed my hatch interior panel to change out my 3rd brake light and was presented with nuts falling out ... they went to part of the latch assy. You guys may want to check to see if it is all bolted in good, mine wasn't and that was 2 years ago before the harsher suspension.
