Question Some of the Many Problems

Well, first off i shall say, i have a 2002 Automatic 2.0 Bug, Salvage title. i got it off a friend for very cheap (cause some of the parts were missing, and its a non finished completely car. he is paying for all the missing parts so w.e.) The bug was damaged in the back drivers side (basically just cut another bug, and welded and painted it.... New rear left quarter, and drivers door, thats it.

1) Anyways, one of the problems i have is my Stereo, its a Monsoon, and for some reason the back speakers dont play very loud, i turned all the settings to the back, and still they seem pretty quite, might be an easy fix but just checking.

2) The other problem is my transmission, its leaking, and ive located the leak to one spot, the last bolt on the bottom of the case where the drive shafts are.... (maybe a bad bolt gasket...) this is why (im guessing) my Check Engine light is on, and my transmission does not shift into its 4th gear when on the freeway....

3) Another problem is my drivers door, when it was replaced (came off a 1.8t,) they replaced just the door with the 1.8 wiring, the problem is, that the door does not correspond with any other part in the vehicle, the remote only works for the trunk and the passenger door. the drivers door i have to manually lock with using the remote to lock other doors. the switch for the windows does not roll down the passenger window, only the drivers. when i go to lock the door from outside, it rolls up only the drivers door window and thats it (sopposed to roll up all windows and sunroof but doesnt. ) i do have the original wiring from the original door, do you think this would fix it?? just dont want to do lots of extra work....

4) Another problem (probably a very easy one) is that i just dont understand how to install the small little panel back on, the one where the lever is to open the hood, (im not the best on cars. lol, but am good. lol)

5) And lastly (that i can think of,) my gas tank does not open with the button, right now i just have it shut, just not all the way, so i can still pull it open, it may also be an easy fix, just dont know.

if i have any other problems i will be sure to post them, that is all for now!!!!

Thank Your VERY VERY VERY much for your help!!!!! sorry for any inconvinience.

Cool

These are just possible scenarios so judge accordingly:

#1) sounds like a wiring short (probably near the impact areas)

#3) could be the window control module (attached to the window motor). It controls power door locks from driver's door, power windows and power mirrors. That Bosch mfg. part is sold only with the motor. Dealer wants around $345 for this assy. I got mine from a salvage yard with a 60 day warr. for $45...

ok. good to know....

# 3, very good to know. maybe i could just take off the control module off the old wiring harness and swap them?? just as a try, hope it will work.

last question, i tried taking off the door panel, how exaclty does it come off, i got all the bolts and clips, just the top wont come off, dont want to brake anything. Thanks a bunch!!!

1> The Monsuck rear speakers are tuned that way. The claim is that rear speakers are for 'fill' only. There was a known issue with double-din (Jetta/Golf) radios being improperly wires around that time frame that cause the speakers to be out of phase. I didn't waste time replacing my whole stereo system, as I like the constant ringing in my ears...

2> The only tool I know how to use on the transmission is a checkbook. It can't be good that you cannot shift into 4th - Address that NOW. I don't know if CEL would be cause by trans issues...

3> It sounds like not everything is connected. Do you still have the switches from the old door? Try the other switches to see if the ones that came with the 1.8t door were bad. The interior pieces for the door were pretty much the same from late 99 -> 05, and I don't think there was a difference between the engines.

4> This is hard to describe typing out - It's quite an acrobatic move to put that piece back in.

5> Does the solenoid make a squeak noise at all? If not, first check the connection under the door skin. If that looks right, you'll have to pop out the fuel filler cover. I believe it's one screw that holds it in. From there, you should see the solenoid. FYI, you can manually release the fuel door by pulling the cable from inside the trunk. The plastic panel that covers the rear light pops out, and if you feel around up there, you'll feel a cable. It will help prevent some dirtbag from siphoning you dry.

Ultimately, I must suggest you invest in a Bentley. It'll be invaluable and worth the investment considering the types of things you're trying to fix.

Lift from the bottom about 45' upwards while sliding upwards. It kind of clips at the top of the door skin.

If that plug is in the trunk, good chance it's cd changer..

1) good to know thats not a problem.

2) i am not driving the vehicle at the moment, i am waiting till i finish up these little things, then i will tow the car to my mechanic to take a look at it.

3) i will go ahead and try that

4) wow, ok, will continue trying to get that bastard on. lol.

5) it doesnt make a noise at all, i figure out that if its shut, just pull on the upper section of the gas lid nicely, and it opens. i will see what i can do, thanks for the help!

wish i had the money! lol. but then again, i wouldnt want a bently (or maybe i would) i would get a few cars instead of a bently though first........

Take off the module together with the motor. If you try to separate them, most of the six little retaining clips will snap off (though that's not fatal).

To remove that door panel you need to continue using an upward jarring motion to release the top of that panel from the door frame. They're stubborn that way...

I don't have any experience with that one, however you might want to check under the seats to see if the plugs for the seat airbags are plugged in. Other than that, you're really going to need a VagCom cable to track that one down.

It's to diagnose the car's internal computer. It's like what they have at Autozone, only more specific. You plug it into your car, and get codes for computer-detected errors/problems. Since it's expensive to do at the stealer's (what isn't?) many people invest in their own. They also might share it with you, if they're close by, in true NB spirit

you can buy VAG-COM from Ebay for 30.00 for the cable and a demo software that lets you do a lot of basic stuff.

On the transmission tell your friend to drain the transmission from the hex drain plug found in the bottom and then have him take out the pan and replace the gasket and all the bolt spacers. Replacing that might fix the leak, oh! and now that you have the pan down might as well change the filter. Then when installing the transmission pan back make sure he adds equal pressure to each bolt, although the tinny metal rings or spacers are there so that pressure is distributed evenly; it is possible to over do it. After that you will need 3-4 liters of PENTOSIN SYNTHETIC FLUID which is the original VW manufacturer, DO NOT use any other fluid. You can either use the Pentosin brand which is about $9 a liter or the VW brand which is also pentosin but sold by VW and cost $14-18 a litter. Search on line for some good deals, here is a link where you can buy the gasket and filter kit:
