Angry Starter went ka ka, replaced, and still not starting up....HELP!

Here's whats going on:

On the way to work, I was at an intersection when I heard a grinding noise and the car started to rattle a lil bit, that's when I thought "Oh S*&t!" because 1 I was almost out of gas. So I take off of the intersection, had to rev to 3k RPM to get started off, went about 50 yards and as I pull into the station, Bailey died. I thought it was a fuel issue, but when I climbed back into the car and turned the key, you could hear the starter whine, but not engage.

After a string of words I won't use here, I called a truck and towed it home. Bought a new starter this morning, and went to do it again.....and no start. Same noise as before, like everything is freewheeling, but not turning the crank.

I need some help or some ideas, I've checked all connections and theyre good, so I'm afraid its the flywheel or something else internal. I'm at the point that if it's got to have the flywheel or something internal replaced, thats it, She's got to go. (But you guys/girls get first dibs at my bolt on goodies )

did you bench test it to see if the solenoid kicked it out? if it did there is a probably a bad connection and the bendix isnt pushing it into the flywheel.
