Default Stupid Question

What exactly is a vagcom? I know it is some sort of scan tool but is there something special about it verses the scan tools that Auto Zone uses?

VAG-COM is a very useful tool to use thatyou can log data onto your laptop to analyse and setermine if you car is running correctly... for my turbo i can use it to determine if my boost expected and boost recieved is accurate, it can help to determine whther or not i have an issue or not.

VAG-com is very useful. you can check out www.ross-tech.com they have all the info you need.

Another thing about it, is that it can read VW-specific codes, that the Autozone tool is unable to.

Depends. It's all on the website, and depends on the dongle you buy and your PC. It can do all that the VW VAG-5051 dealer tool can do.

I have an el-cheapo setup that lets me check/clear CELs, Brake and Airbag codes as well as reprogram the door locks and set some other options/features of the car. Its a good investment.

Yeah...with what the dealer charges to scan the car, it pays for itself after about 2 uses. And once you have it, you can scan it all day long if you want! Its a really great thing to have. Worth the money you put into it up front

When you say "el-cheapo" what brand is it? Did you get it from ross-tech or is it another type of software?

Will the unregistered software read codes?

I went to ross-tech website and they have the software key for $99 but it does not come with the interface. Would the software work with a third party interface like this one from ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/USB-K...QQcmdZViewItem

It is an unsupported cable, bought on ebay. I have a beta of the 311.2n release that it works with.registered version do read and explain what the pulled codes mean.
