Default How to use cruise control...

Here's the scoop! I bought my bug used, so I don't have an owner's manual. I tried to search the forums, but came up empty handed. I know this probably sounds dumdum stupid, but would someone please tell me how to use cruise control on my '98 manual! I'm 99.9% sure that I have cruise control.

TIA!

On the "stick" on the left side (same as your turn indicator), you should find the Cruise Controls. There's a sliding switch on top, and a push-in button on the end of the stick.

To turn off the CC, move the sliding switch all the way to the right. There should be a click that'll lock it in place.

To turn on the CC, push the sliding switch all the way to the left. Hold it there for a second or two for the CC to engage. Once you let it go, the switch will settle in the middle.

To slow down while cruising, push in the button on the end.

To speed up while cruising, push the sliding switch all the way to the left.

You can also disengage the CC by braking.

My CC on my 98 is different. Pull the switch to the end of the stick to turn it on, press the button on the end of the stick to engage it. My stick only has on/off switch and a set button.

Could this be a difference between Automatics and Manuals?

on the 02 models the CC is alot simpler.

One and off are a switch on the leftside arm.
There's a toggle switch thing on the end of the arm.
One direction will acclerate and the other direction will set the speed.
You can also set the speed using your pedal.
Braking will disengage the CC.
Accelerating using the arm is a bit rough, so i always use the pedal to set my speed.

Oh and for pdoel's sake, please only use this on highways!

I have the exact same problem. I got my '99 5 speed used and it didn't come with the owners manual either. I can't figure out the cruise control either.

It doesn't LOOK like it should be complicated. There's a toggle switch that said on/off, and a button on the end that said set.

But with the toggle set to on, and then pressing on the set button for a few seconds, when I release the gas, I just slow down. I was thinking that since my car is used, maybe this feature no longer works.

You have to maintain a steady speed and than hold down the set button until the CC kicks in. You might feel your pedal go down or the car accelerate. It's really simple.

Upon looking at my stalk again, I have off, on and resume... so if I pull it back towards on again, it should resume. I never knew this

PS: Your cruise could be not working due to a blown fuse.

The cruise will also not work if the brake light switch is going out. Weird.
