Default My NB won't start on the first turn of the key

i have a 98 NB with 2.0 engine. i've had this problem for about 6 months now. when i first turned the key, the engine won't turn over, everything else seems to be fine, i heard the humming noise. then, it usually starts on the second turn of key. but recently, it's getting much worse, i have to turn the key on and off 3, 4 or even 5 times in order to start the car. once the car starts, it runs just fine. and i have a fairly new battery, both terminals are kept clean. any ideas?
thanks,

Cool

Maybe take a look at the ignition switch wires. Check to make sure wires to starter are tight...

thanks for the valuable input guys. i took the car to a shop(non vw dealer) for inspection today. the machanic said it was not the starter. the starter should be ok. however, he didn't want to fix it for me because he was not confortable with working on an vw. he suggested me to take it to dearler. but i am trying to avoid to take it to dealer because they always overcharge me. the machanic, however, did mention that it's mostly like the ignition switch. anyone know how to check the ignition switch.
thank you!

Here's a thread initiated by "TOAD" regarding the ignition switch issue. Be sure to let us know how it goes...
