Default headlight silicone sealant gunk - how do i remove and where do i get some more

so a while back, sometime last year, both of my headlight bulbs blew at once. thinking it was something more serious than a fuse since they both blew at the same time, i took my car to a supposedly VW specializing shop. after an hour and a half of trying to diagnose any problem, they said they did all they could by changing both burnt headlights, and charged me $150 for their trouble. As i walk out to my car, i notice black gunk around the headlights, and conclude that the mechanic must have pulled off the lenses in trying to get the headlights out. i had just recently lubed the tracks, so i concluded it was his incompitence that was to blame.

well i've been cleaning it up little by little, and most recently, my passenger side lens fell off, so i'm trying to start anew in the sealant application.

i've used Turtle Wax Bug and Tar remover to get it off the paint, and it doesn't do much more than soften it up so i can smear it some more.

does anyone know of any chemicals i could use to clean the sealant gunk off my headlight assembly?

and does anyone know where i can get some more of that sealant (or comparable) to fix it up?

thanks.

(and if anyone has a spare passenger side headlight assembly laying around, i'll take it off your hands - send me a PM.)

Clean Green is always a good start, let it sit for a few min and then have at it.

Not that i advise this, but brake clean will take anything off, including the clear coat. So you make the call.

As for the seal, not sure what to use.
