My daughter lost her key fab.. It went a month. I finally bought her a key. I put the key in and the Alarm goes off beeping. With no fab how you get it off?? I figured get out lock and unlock the door with the key.. Question What Makes The Alarm go off?? Next the Gas door will not open. I hear the Servo run but door will not open. I pull the cable. Is there a link to fix cable.. Any help how to do this?? While Im here I need 3/4 center wheel caps for my 99 NB.. thankyousoverymurch raveATusit.net |

Actually, you CAN yank the fuse for the alarm (on the card it has a key on it i believe). Note: it also disables the power windows and the power door locks! However, this will work for the intended purpose until you can get the door switch fixed.

I see on Fuse 6 Central Locking System.. I will look at fuse panel tomorrow. How about the gas door cable. When you press the button does it actually move the cable or just make the door unlock??? |

Here is everything you need to know...
You could have a bad door latch asm. From your post, it sounds like you don't have a remote for the car, thus you are using the key to lock and unlock the doors. If you have power windows on the car, then try this test: Put key in door, turn and hold in the unlock position, both windows should roll down after a few seconds. Then turn and hold in the lock position, both windows should roll back up. If the windows do not roll down, then the micro switch that gets triggered when you unlock the doors have failed. If the windows don't roll up, again, a micro switch. Next, open the doors and see if the interior lights come on. If not, then a micro switch in the latch has failed, thus the car doesn't know the doors have opened. Try the passenger door and see if the ligths come on then (and make sure the interior lights are set to turn on when doors open). When you lock or unlock the car via the key, you trigger micro switches that in turn cause the power locks to lock or unlock the doors. This happens when you turn the key about 30degs-ish. If you turn the key futher, then you are mechanically locking or unlocking the door. There is no immobilizer system in your car. The alarm system is not part of an immobilizer system of the Beetle. Getting a key cut has no effect on the alarm system outside of a poorly cut key that doesn't mechanically work. Now then, what I think is happening is you have a door latch that first off doesn't know you have unlocked the door (micro switch isn't sending the "unlock doors and turn off alarm" signal), and also the door latch asm doesn't know the door has been opened. So the alarm stays armed and doesn't see the door open. When you put the key in the ignition and turn it on, that triggers the alarm, like it should because the alarm is armed and the door hasn't been opened (or so the car thinks this). A new door latch asm will resolve this. Fuel flap, can you hear the motor that opens the fuel flap trying to work? If so, then you need to replace the cable that goes from said motor to the fuel flap. These cables will sieze up and thus the release motor can't open the flap. Work around, pop the round cap that is in the trunk area on the right rear and you will see a black "tube" that goes into goes into the sheet metal towards the outside of the car. Grab this "tube" and pull it, this will make the fuel flap open up for you (and destroy the failed cable). If I am correct, just write a thank you note on a crisp $20 bill and send it my way.

FWIW, my 2002 with factory immobilizer and a dead driver door microswitch... if I let the car sit long enough the system re-arms/locks itself. If I start my car, it will start, the alarm goes off, and the car died. I've repeted this with three other VW models outside the beetle -- all models 99+ have this in beetle, 99.5+ on all other MkIV models. IIRC this is a 2000 model or a 99, it's got the immobilizer. The only year that lacked it was 1998, and 1998 also lacked the LED side markers.

How about the link on how to replace the Gas door cable. Send me that and spoon feed me on fixing that and I will send you 1 worn out $20.. It Spends just as good as a crisp one does. |

the 1999 beetle did NOT have immobilizer, Eeyore, my first 1999 2.0 beetle did not have one.
Growler, my 2nd 2000 beetle did have one. however, they are correct in describing the way the alarm works if it doesnt sense the door has opened.

Is that a true of false.. Now lets get to the gas door.. When pressing the open door key I hear at the door and you hear at the gas door.. How do you change/trace how the cable goes through. How to replace. Thanks |

there is a round access panel on the passenger side in the trunk in the side molded plastics. open it, the cable is right there near the star nut that holds the tail light in. just give it a gentle tug. err there was disassembly instructions in the how-to section, i believe, on how to replace it with a new cable.

To the best of my vast knowlage (or lack of), the 99 year model Beetle do not have the immobilzer system. It is the 00 year model that the immobilizer system started to hit. Again, immobilzier and alarm, two seperate systems in different areas of the car.
As for the fuel flap, I'll cover the basics here... You need to remove the center piece of the cargo hold trim (the one that the carpet locks onto). There are 4 plastic fittings that you push the center out of then you can remove the pins, and then unsnap that center piece. There will then be a screw that was covered up on the right side trim that you can now see, remove it. Pop that egg-ish shaped grill out and there will be two more screws to remove. Unplug the interior light that is in the right side trim panel. Now you can flex that panel out some and you will see a white box secured to a black metal braket. The braket has 2 screws securing it to the body, remove the screws and then unplug the hanress from the white box. Remove the right rear tail light ams. Open the fuel flap, remove the metal clip at the "latch" area under the fuel flap that holds the end of the cable in place. Remove cable from the fuel flap area. Unhook the cable from the white box (this is the release motor) and then pull cable out of the car. Feed new cable from the opening of the tail light into the car and carefully thread it up to the are of the white box (there is a hole you have to get it though, a bit tricky), hook new cable up to white box. Secure white box/brakcet back to body of car and plug it back up. Fit the rubber groumet into place and feed the end of the cable back into the fuel flap and secure with clip. Put trim pieces back in place. Write "Thank You" on $20 bill and send my way. ![]() |

[/QUOTE]Tell you what come on over and I will give you $50 dollars to do just that. Ride the hound to Tennessee. No way I can do that. I quit smokeing dope about 15 years ago.. I would have to fire one of those hog legs up to get all that done. I thought it was one cable that ran from the driver door switch to the gas door flap. While your here get my Air Bag lights off. Been on since 2003. |
