Hi all!!
A couple weeks ago, I noticed this little part of Daisy was dettaching itself. I'm wondering if a little super glue would cure this. The driver side is doing it just a little, but not much. The passenger side, however, is peeling off about 4 inches from the dash. It keeps getting worse. Would the dealer help me out on this(and not cost an arm and a leg?) Here's a pic. The arrow points to where it's peeling. I'd go out and take a pic right now to show it better, but I'm too lazy and the garage is VERY cold. I'll try to take another pic tomorrow. Thanks in advance. Cori

I have seen this problem ... not on my car ... are you saying the cloth covering on the weather seal is coming off? If so I would not use superglue to stick it back on, but a light contact cement, you don't want something that will blead through the cloth. Put the a thin coat of the contact cement on the rubber side, let it get tacky then press the cloth down to it. I can't reccomend what to use .... for bigger jobs I have used 3M 77 which is an aresol (sp) and wouldn't work for a small fix like you need.
If you are talking about the rubber part of it ... there is nothing you can do ... but better pix might give us a better idea of the problem. |

I had the black seal replaced on the driver's door - this is grey and stiffer than rubber.
Edit - Ok I went out and looked at Daisy while I called the dealer. What is seperating is the inside equivalent of the black seal(the grey seal is right next to it). I would consider this under warranty, since it's not cosmetic. I'm good until 50,000 miles right? I'm going by the dealer Wednesday so the service tech can look at it. 2 days after I got it, on my drivers side, that piece you are pointing out fell down in my lap. The weather stripping on the beetles has a vanity cover. It's that nice cloth piece that covers the black weather strip and makes the roof-carpet look all tucked in and tidy. Now in your case, I don't know if it's the weather stripping coming out (that would mean the black rubber part is coming out of the roof) or is the cloth strip separating from the weather strip? In my case, it was the cloth separating from the weather strip. I trotted on down to our local Schucks Auto Supply, and picked up a $4.00 tube of Automotive Trim cement. you apply a thin coat to both pieces (taking great care to not get any on the carpet, leave a little space between the edge and where you glue, cause the glue will spread) and then after a few seconds you press them together and hold for a few seconds, and the stuff is back where it should be ![]() It took me about 20 minutes to do it carefully for the entire strip. I had called Volkswagon, and they claimed this is normal after some time, (time varies on cars : I.E. DEFECT), and what happens the cloth strip SHRINKS. And BECAUSE it shrinks the glue idea won't work if it's shrunk that far. IF you can just lightly press the piece back into place and it doesn't take a lot of pushing, then glue it and you'll be fine. What * I * had to do, was peal off the strip (that is, separate the cloth piece from the black rubber piece) all the way down to where the cloth piece tucks into the kick panel. That cloth piece goes 3 or 4 inches or more UNDER the kick-plate, so you just pull it upwards a little, and thus, your shrinking problem is fixed. So glue it starting at the top and work your way downards towards the front, so that once you are done, the extra is once again tucked back under the kickplate and it's done ![]() Anyway, that's what I did ![]() |

I pulled this out today actually to get to my headliner! IF it is the rubber it'll be thick and have a grove in it to pinch back onto the door frame. If it's the felt/grey strip itself then it can be glued back on. If your seal has split you'd have rubber and the felt, and then you'd need it replaced. If the dealer will give you a free estimate i'd take it in, I hope it's a superglue fix and nothing more!

Thank you so much for all your advice!! I didn't take another picture last night but I'm not sure it would show you any more than the first. Maybe if I put the camera on the dash - I might end up blinding myself with the flash!!(wow that rhymed and I didn't even plan that
) This seems weird that a part like that would start to fall off before Daisy is 3 years old...oh well. I'm going to try the dealer route first like Bree said and we'll go from there. Usually it's kind of a pain to go by the dealer because my work hours are 8-4:30 and sometimes the service dept is a little crazy at the end of the day. However, I'm staying at my dealer's house this week and taking care of his 3 kids(10,6,3)and I have Wednesday off so I'm going to go by then and see what Daisy's diagnosis and treatment options are. I'll let you know Wednesday!!Cori |

Hi! I spent the last 6 days watching 3 kids and surviving on less than 6 hours of interrupted sleep, but I had a good time. Anyway, since I had last Wednesday off, I went by the dealer and the service advisor said that it's purely cosmetic. The car is still under warranty so they'll be replacing it. Still no new pic...my car got stuck in the driveway where I was watching the kids(owner of the dealership) - they have a long driveway - so I parked in the neighbor's driveway for a few days and whenever I thought of going outside in the cold and taking a better picture, the oldest kiddo would hit her younger brother in the head or the 6year old would need help with something!!!
I will take another picture before the old one comes off to have as a reference. Cori |
