Default Oil leak after 1rst oil change.

My wife's brand new 2006 beetle now leaks oil from the oil canister after it's first oil change. Dealer is aware of this, has anyone else experienced this?

They may have not used the proper drain tool to drain the housing. Alot of people just use a screwdriver to push the drain valve over end up damaging it. There is a proper tool for just this reason. This is the tool for draining the oil filter housing.

What's an oil canister? I had to swap my oil plug for an oversized one when I found it was stripped and oil would slowly leak out. I also wraped the oil plug with a little plumbers tape...no more leak.

As wise as you are Hudson I'm surprised you don't know about other types of oil filters besides what is on your NB. It is simply that the metal outer case of the oil filter is permanent and only the guts/element gets replaced. Here's a picture. TDI has been like this a while and I assume so is the new 2.5L 5-banger.

I've never heard of such a thing and why would anyone bother? What do you do....just change the inside of the filter? Sounds like a needless mess to me personally. I'll stick to the more conventional spin-on oil filter replacement. LOL...sorry my wisdom doesn't include filters like that.

I agree, the spin-on seems like much less hassle and mess. Yes, you just change the inside and the tool pictured earlier is used to drain the housing.

Remember the old oil baths? Now those are messy. I have one on my 1960 Ford tractor and a few of my old air-cooled Dubs had them.

i'm sure the tech that did your oil change didn't have the tool pictured above, so he stuck a screwdiver into the little drain "nipple" and damaged it.

the first time i changed the oil on a new 2.0t/2.5 i couldn't believe my eyes. it's a stupid contraption for sure.

Thanks for your replies, my problem is that the canister is leaking between itself and the engine block. It has had two new canisters installed in an attempt at a fix without success. I was thinking it was a known bug and others were experiencing the same problem. It's at the dealer now while they take another crack at it.

What turned out to be the fix for your oil filter leak?

Well it looks like the dealer got the problem resolved. Some part above the oil filter was cracked, no leaks now.
