Default please help to diagnose the problem

When I stopped in front of the stop sign today, the engine turned off. The engine light and battery light were on.

I failed to start the engine in the first two times but succeed in the 3rd time. And everything is fine after that.

Any idea what is the problem? Thanks

I agree with kc ... we need more info. Or you can just remember to push the clutch in before you come to the stop sign!

it is a 1999 2.0 Auto New Beetle. 59000miles on it.

My wife told me that the radio turned off for a second when the engine died. Then the check engine light and battery light were on. The radio came back again. She tried 3 times to start the engine. Now the check engine light is off, therefore I could not read the code.

First check is both terminals on the battery - they must be clean visually, clean and shiny where they make contact woith the battery post and tight....then check the connectors to the fuses on top of the battery for tightness where the cables connect.

I agree ... sounds like battery or fuses attop battery. The Beetle eats a battery at least every 3 years, mine is all stock electronically at least and I have replaced battery twice in 3.5 years. And you can still pull codes even if the check engine light is off ... some codes stay stored.
