I have a V.A.G. code 16705 and 16706, SAE P-code P0321 and P0322 on my 2002 Turbo Beetle. The Bentley book gives the description Ign./Distributor Eng. Speed Inp. Circ Range/Performance for code 16705 and Ign./Distributor Eng. Speed Inp. Circ No Signal for code 16706. What should I look to replace. At first I thought is was crankshaft positioning sensor, but I see that there is a code for that. I purchased a cranshaft positioning sensor but I have not installed it yet.
The problem is intermittent and the car will shut off at a stop and then cranks quite a while until it starts. Every once in a while I will also get an intermittent miss while driving. Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

My experience has been with Holden Commodore Crank Angle Sensors (same as CPS) and your description mirrors those when they fail. They will fail when the engine is hot and a quick test is to pour some cold water over the sensor when it fails. This rapidly cools the sensor and restores it to working condition. On Commodores a faulty CAS does not always log a fault. Good Luck.
