Default Air Bag Light on

I have had no problems with this on my 2000 1.8T Beetle until today. Parked my car and came out an hour later and the air bag light did not go out after starting the car. Made another stop for 20 min and the light did not go out again. Could this be a fuse or maybe one of the problems that has already been discussed? I looked down at the drivers seat this morning I just noticed a white connector is hanging at the right seat bottom. Do I need to remove the seat to plug it in? Disconnect battery? Will the air bag light reset itself?
Any help is appreciated.

my air bag light has been on for a good year..I'm very interested to see what they tell you!

They told me the clip where you buckle your seatbelt needs to be replaced. Part is about 100 bucks...

Mechanic told me the code read it was the side airbag and I need to go to a dealer as there may be short in the system. Can I have another shop do this as well as clear the code? How involved is this repair? Thanks.

Mike .... I really don't know how hard it is to track down the problem. First I would start with finding where the white wire hanging under the seat goes. I know that a lot of VW owners have had problems with the side airbag wiring failing inside of the seats, I have seen some how too's to take the seat covering off ... but I think they were on the old forum here and probably gone forever. But start with those wires.

Check under the seat belt insert where the electrical attatchment is. If the wire is loose it will trigger the seatbelt light or the airbag light.

Should I disconnect the battery and do I need to remove the seat? Thanks.

You can usually just put the seat in the up position and wiggle the connection and make sure that it is tight.

Default airbag

There have been several issues with airbags.

1) Seatbelt connector
2) Passenger side airbag sensor.

Both should be warranty (both issues I've had were replaced).

If you have a vag-com it will tell the whole story. If you happen to have access to one I would highly recommend it as you can print out the codes and take it to your dealer. Often times they will ask where you got the information, but they will know you are serious about the repair. Often times they don't know what a VAG-Com is.

Good luck.

I pulled the drivers seat out and saw that the yellow and green connections under the seat were tight. I have heated seats but I did not see another connector(yellow?) for the heated seats or air bag. There were no loose connectors under the seat. The only connector I saw hanging was a white one but it was only half the size of the others-it looked like the other half was missing but I could not see a place where it would go. I installed the seat, reconnected the battery and the air bag light was still on.

Crash sensor could also cause the airbag light to go on. My airbag light has been on twice. Both times because of the passenger side crash sensor.
