Default Coolant Leak - D/S - Coolant Flange

UPDATE - Erratic idle/vac pressure on cold start is still happening. This only happens as long as the Secondary Air Pump is running. When the pump stops then the idle and pressure go back to about normal. WTF?

I noticed Scarab leaving pink/red puddle treats over the last week from the drivers side. All my research on this great site lead me to believe it was the Coolant Flange/Heart Valve so when I dropped it off this AM I told the guys to look at that first!

I live in an apartment complex. I cannot really work on my car and was in a bind so I took it to the local shop after

Sure enough.....cracked flange is causing leak and I am out $240. This includes the flange, seals, labor and *G12* coolant.

If I had a garage(wich I will in 3 weeks) I know I could have done it myself but had to be done ASAP.

I LOVE THE ORG and thanks to all of those bugs/peeps who have fallen before me!

Oh my gosh... $240. I'm sorry to hear you weren't in a position to replace it yourself.

I replaced mine last year - the part was $9 (comes with the seal...) and G-12 was $15 a gallon (both items ordered online). I'd never done it before and it only took about 45 minutes.

Yea, that is what I was afraid of. I could have saved TONS of money if I had the garage. Good news is that I will have a garage in a few weeks. ALSO

Fixing the Flange also seemed to fix my erratic idle. I wont know for sure till this morning when I fire it up but I think that the leak caused air bubbles in the lines and the coolant sensors were reading all wonky. I'll know more in a bit...

Erratic Idle is gone(for now). I drove my car on and off all weekend and the odd idle problem at start up seems to have gone away. I am not a mechanic but any air that collects in the system would sit in/around the coolant temp sensor. Correct?

Wouldn't this mess with idle till the coolant moves through the system a bit!?!?!?

Anyway......Scarab is doing 100% better now that the coolant leak was fixed! Hurray!

I honestly don't know that part # since I did not do it myself. But I will take a look on-line I know that it looks exactly like the one here!

thanks .... since I will be flushing the system when I do my timing belt ... a little preventive maintenance is in order, especially if the part is that inexpensive.

I couldn't find the part number but the cost even at a dealership is not a whole lot for piece of mind.

I KNOW that this is something I could have done myself but didn't have the place to do it. :-(

STARTED NEW THREAD http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/show...942#post300942

I thought so also but the start up problem is still there. I own a Vag-Com and if I knew what to look at I would in a heartbeat.

STILL PROBLEM - Start up is rough when the Secondary Air Pump is running AND I get the occasional stall out at idle. The Boost Guage shows right around -19 normally and on start up it'll go to '0' and misfire ALOT.

Where might I look with the Vag-Com to see what is up!?!?!?
this is what I do know!
5 Faults Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected
P0301 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich
P1137 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16686 - Cylinder 2: Misfire Detected
P0302 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected
P0304 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Thanks in advance

Well ... I just had to replace one of the vacuum checkvalves on mine ... the one on the top of the engine, I replaced the one on the drivers side a few years ago when it broke. The one on the top was worn out from hitting on something. It was the cause of my vacuum leak, but I didn't have the problems you are having .... just boost gauge read 10 in vacuum at idle and would max at 10PSI boost. 19 in vacuum is still low ... should be 22 ... 20 when the A/C is on. I think you still have a slight vac leak.

Yea, I ran my car hard last night after clearing the codes and I think the MAF is going possibly. Isn't that second value a little high?

Default Coolant leak like Scarab.....help, not a mechanic!!

Hello! New member here, definitely NOT a mechanic, but want to make sure I'm not taken advantage of at the local VW dealer just 'cause I'm a girl...
Having red G12 leaks, near driver's side over the last few days. Bought G12 to fill reservior, as VW can't get my car in for at least 4 days. How easy is this problem to fix? Say it's the whole Coolant/Flange kit that needs to be replaced? How costly? Can any mechanic probably do it? Totally lost, and worried about dishing out too much dough....can one of you please help?? Oh, and I have an '01 NB TDI named Sunni....

Well, after paying to have mine put in and then seeing where the flange is at.

I would first ask if you have any friends that are mechanically inclined? then

Do you trust them to do it right?

If you answered NO to any of those then I would suggest paying the $ to have it done. Anything beyond $300 is way too much but then again it's a dealership...

Talking Coolant Leak - D/S - Coolant Flange

Thanks for the advice!! I'll definitely update the thread after all of this is taken care of. I do have an auto-shop (referred to me by a mechanically inclined friend) that I'm taking my VDub to this afternoon. I'll update on the non-dealer costs....Thanks again for your expertise!! At least I now feel a little more competent where the mechanical terminology for this problem is involved!

When they quote you, ask how much labor they are charging. There is no reason replacing the coolant flange should cost more than 1 hour of labor.

The part with shop markup and all should be under $30...

And make sure they use G-12 coolant...

It's too bad you're not in the Atlanta area... I could change it out for $50 and we'd both benefit

Yea, Don't let them bang you on the labor. I beleive that the G12 will cost 'around' the same as the part you are replacing. So the parts will run you just under $60.

Good luck....
