Default instrument cluster rebuild?

My wife's 98 2.0L is having what appears to be common symptoms o a blown instrument cluster (Speedo does not work, fuel gauge "bobbing", odo doesn't work).

I know replacing it is a big deal because of the immobilizer and the odo, but had anyone had any experience getting theirs refurbed? This company does it:

Any good/bad experiences?

Also, I assume these guys are just replacing the voltage regulator that I see in the circuit diagram. Has anyone replaced this by itself with any luck?

Thanks in advance!

I've had my battles with the speedo.

I had mine replaced, had no idea that anyone would rebuild one.

Been here since 2002 and never seen a post about this before.

I know there have been tons of folks that wanted to trade the Speed with the Tach on their cluster, like the BeetleCup cars, but I have never seen anyone pull it off, wonder if these guys could do that?

Thankfully, immobilizer didn't appear until 2000.

I have photos somewhere of a spare cluster I took apart a few years ago. I should dig them out and post them. The stepper motors (which operate the gauges) are really easy to replace, but I never researched where I could get replacements.

One of these days, when I'm really bored, I'll attempt the Cup conversion on the spare
