Default Universal Catalytic Converter

I am planning on having a muffler shop install a Universal Catalytic Converter, it seems to be cost effective for a 98 beetle, the dealer wanted $1,000 and STS wanted to take a look and then order the Converter from the dealer, which I am expecting to be very expensive also. I called a local muffler shop and they carry Universal Catalytic Converter and will do the job for around $200. Has anyone run into problems with a Universal Catalytic Converter ?

That's deffinately the route I'd go Rob.

Like jian pointed out, make sure they weld in bungs or do whatever they need to to make sure your measuring system doesn't get screwed up.

But that sounds like a good move to me.

btw, you might want to see if there's anyone you can sell that used cat to, recycle it or something. There's alot of $ still to be had from your old part; don't let the muffler shop hold onto it w/o knowing that.

I've got a mechanic friend that sells used Acura cat's for $75 ea. You may find something similar; metal prices are way up lately.

Of course they SHOULD, but don't expect it. Tell them, so they know from the beginning even if they don't.

basically just a hole & a nut.

It's how you mount your threaded O2 sensor.

Just got back from the muffler shop and they relaced the cat conv. with and OEM part, final cost with tire rotation came to $280. Thanks for all suggestions.
