Are you trying to get rid of the ring, or change it?
If I remember right, there are a couple of tabs that you have to release under the console. It's only a few Apex screws, I think 4, to get underneath. I'd say do it that way, just to make sure. But be careful of the plug on the bottom of the outlet, it's got short wires.

Well..I'd like to swap it with the one in the trunk (never used). Thanks for the heads up. I tried prying it a little yesterday but it felt like I would break something before it would release...

I was thinking about this issue again today and I am going to try the heat-shrink tubing (used for electrical connectors) on the existing cap. I'll let you know how this works out (or not)...

Well...to make this repair I used 21 gauge heat shrink tubing which enveloped the two "straps" snuggly and applied heat from a hair dryer (No, not the kind your grandmother used to sit under forever while reading "Vogue" and chatting it up with the girls.). While this worked in theory, the reality was that the plastic straps were too "slippery" for the tubing.
The success for this repair came when I inserted Ultimate Glue inside the heat shrink tubing and THEN inserted the straps. I left this alone overnight to cure (4 hours is recommended) and the repair is now sturdy... |
