Default Mark 4 terminology

Does the phrase "mark 4" relate to the current generation New Beetle? I saw it in an ad for a pedal set and can't figure out what they are referring to.

Yes, New Beetles are based on the VW Golf/Jetta MK4 platform. MK4 pedal sets will all work fine.

Actually .... the Golf/Jetta are based on the New Beetle MK4 Platform. The New Beetle came out in 98 and was the first MK4 platform car, the Golf and Jetta did not use it until 1999 for the Golf and 1999.5 for the Jetta.

Actually... It was still designed as the G/J IV chassis. If the Golf and Jetta were based on the NB, we'd say those cars are based on the MK1 Beetle chassis.

Actually, the NB is on the Golf chassis, as the Mk4 Golf was introduced in 1997 (1999.5 for North America).

I actually agree with you scott!

Dan:
Mark 1 - Mark 5 are CHASIS designations. This is essentially the 'floor plan, frame work, suspension, engine cradle' type of component.

The difference between a golf and a jetta, is the glorified body-kit.

Mk1's were the first ones; the original Rabbit.

They were eventually redesigned with a longer wheel base, and who knows what other changes. That made them Mk2.

etc.

ALL New Beetles currently in production are still on the Mk4 platform. (mk=mark ... see what I did there? written abbreviation, still pronounced 'mark' ) [New Beetle's didn't come out till the mk4 generation, they just didn't exist there when Mk1-Mk3 was around]

GTi's have been on all 5 chasis styles.

Now to add some mud to the water, passat's are on a the B platform. A mk4 Passat does not use the same chasis as a mk4 jetta. Gti/golf/jetta/New Beetle/Audi TT/Audi A3/(Audi S3?)/(Audi A4?)/(Audi S4?) are all on the A platform. Passats are bigger and are on the B platform. (maybe with Audi A6/S6, and Audi A8/S8's).

I'm sure Seat's are on the same platforms as well probably.

Each "Platform" goes through generations of growth/refinement. Each generation is a new "Mark".

Audi TT, A3/S3, are the only A-chassis cars offered. The A4/S4 and Mk5 Passat (1998-2005MY in US) are on the B-chassis. A6/S6 on the C-chassis, and A8/S8 on the D-chassis.

It's odd because not all Passats are really B-chassis cars. The newest Passat is not, for example. A lot of people call it a "B6" even though it's not.
