I hate it that when my fuel light beeps on that it goes to completely empty in less than 5 miles but I can still drive 50+ without refuling. I know its a protection for the engine but jeez it can be annoying.

Don't know. I usually refuel shortly after the light goes on.

The furthest ever was 27km on the highway.
I made it, but almost needed a change of underwear
Needless to say, I'm never doing that again!

My oil pressure sensor was giving me problems in the spring and I had to get the car towed to the garage twice. When the low oil pressure light starts flashing it makes the same beep as the low fuel buzzer. I finally got the oil problem solved, but the fuel buzzer always gives me a gross feeling in my stomach. I try to keep it above half a tank always just so I never have to hear it.

Just keep in mind that the gas is used to cool the fuel pump that is inside the fuel tank. So when the fuel level is low you are overheating the fuel pump, cuting the life of the fuel pump.
Just my two cents.....

With mine, my rule of thumb is to gas up within 40 miles after the light comes on. Fyi, I've put as much as 14.9 gallons in. I just checked my records and found 45 miles is the farthest I've tried to stretch it...

On my car I know that when the light comes on I have 1.5 gal. left of gas. Normally, I go an extra 28 miles with no problems.

i have the same feeling because it's also the same beep that you hear when the brake pressure is low (I had that problem a while ago)... except that with the brake pressure warning, the brake light flashes constantly and you get three long beeps about every 30 seconds. mind you, the fluid was barely below the MIN mark so i went ahead and drove it over to my mechanic.. but boy was that an annoying ride.

The longest I made it once the 'walking light' came on was about 30 miles. filled up at 14.8 gallons.

i think i read there's 1.9 gallons of fuel left when the thing beeps. that being true, and knowing i get about 25mpg in town, i know i can go about 40 miles before i have to really worry.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

Hi folks,I'm brand new to this forum but have been around VW's since my first beetle in 1963.
I used the search engine here and this post was some what related to my question so I'm going to ask it here and hope I can get an answer.
I'm in Minnesota and yesterday was the first really cold day this winter and it dropped down to 19 degrees. The family drove about 15 miles to Thanksgiving dinner with no issues but when I started my 2002 beetle my low fuel light came on. I had just over a half tank of gas. Is this a float mechanism or what exactly triggers this circuit? I have only seen this light once before as I am a stickler for fueling when I go below 1/4. My first reaction was stop and get gas to insure my gauge was right.I added fuel and the gauge responded but the light continued to stay on. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bud

Alright Bud, welcome to your 2002 New Beetle and its annoying speedo cluster that were installed during that year. Get used to your light, it will NEVER turn off once the circuit fails. I have a 2002 NB 1.8t and mine went on permanently once when it was in warranty so they changed out the cluster, thats the only way to fix it. Of, out of warranty it happened again so I just live with the light being on. You get used to it. The beep signal will still occur normally when the fuel level is low and would normally trigger the light on circuit but the light is already on. Whats really wrong is a dud resistor is present on the circuit board that relates to the LED, I don't know which one but if you could replace it on the board it would trigger normally again. This happens primarily in 2002 clusters. VW just switches the whole speedo cluster to fix it. I've lived with mine on for over four years now.
