Question Musty Odor

Replaced the cabin/pollen filter, the old not was nasty. Sprayed some stuff I got at the local auto store in the intake since I had the filter off with the ac on and fan on 4. Not quite there yet. Need to know if this is a good way to spray the evaporator core. If not, need step by step instructions. Also, need step by step instuctions about the drain tube. Where to look underneath and best way to clean it.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

JenzDad

was not too sure where to post this

Thanks for getting this where it belongs!!!

Sorry, I really don't know what to suggest. I try to avoid the mustiness by turning off the A/C a couple of minutes before I stop driving, letting the fan run on its own, hoping to drain the condensate.

Mostly I just wanted to say welcome to a fellow Okie!

How do you replace cabin filter? Do you have a step by step?

... Oh... WELCOME!

I had the musty AC odor once, and some blessed org member told me how to solve it. Now, after a solid run of AC I turn it off when I get home (like Jacob), but I also crank up the heat, and let the air blow on a high setting with heat for a couple of minutes. It works like a charm, and it makes scientific sense to me, because heat and dryness kill microorganisms that cause that smell

That makes sense to me to and I do not know why I did not think of that. Will give that a try. Thanks

How do you clean out the drain tube? Where is the exact location of it from underneath the car?

Thanks

That's a good question about the drain tube. I'm sure there's gunk in there keeping water trapped aboard! I'll see if I can find something in the service manual or on the CD-Rom.

That was quick!

It's under the hood, behind a flap in the insulation on the bulkhead (which I guess is what they call the firewall). Looks like it's just about the middle of the firewall.

The book says to fold the insulation flap upwards, remove the drain valve. "The water drain valve flap and body must not be stuck together. Insulation mat must not be deformed or damaged in the area of water drain valve. The opening in the drain valve body must point downwards with the flap hinge at the top. When the insulation cover is closed it must be flush with the insulation matting. If the insulation cover is pushed in too far, the water drain valve flap can become jammed."

Hope this helps!

Also, if you're interested, check out www.vwcluboftulsa.com and we've also got a Yahoo message board you could sign up for. We get together every once in a while, and that board is a really easy way to get the details.

Found the flap and all looked fine. Had a piece of braided wire I ran through the flap and it went in about 12 to 14 inches. Was clean as a whistle. Have not driven her today. A pole jump out from the side of the road and 'kissed' the side of her. No passenger side window now and the heated mirror is toast. Jenny is fine, more embarrassed than anything. Told her that is why we have parts stores, but there is no new Jenny stores. I digress...at least the BRAND new front passenger side turn signal assembly I JUST replaced was spared as well.

Now what????? Any spray product that works??? Where did you get it and how did you apply it? Tried the heat, but it came right back by morning.

As always, TIA.........

I know the stealership "treated" the system somehow, but don't know where they sprayed the stuff.

So sorry about the window and mirror! Is the door okay?

Well, lets say it could have been a LOT worse. She did get a start on removing the graphics on that side.

Main thing is, she is okay. Thanks for asking!

Question A/C condensate line or something else?

Is there a photo how-to for checking the condensate line? I've had a wet floorboard on the passenger side two times in the last month.

The first time, the car had been sitting for two weeks during Christmas vacation (passenger side slightly downhill), and I noticed the passenger front floor was wet. We did have some rain during that time, so it could have been coming in from somewhere else (no sunroof).

Again this morning, it is wet. I ran the A/C for the first time yesterday since Christmas, and we got a heavy rain during the night, so I once again can't isolate the problem, but I'd like to start with the A/C line, and some pictures would be great. Any other ideas?

Do you have a sunroof? If so, I would start by clearing out the sunroof drains. They get clogged and this leads to water leaking into the car. Common issue.

Also make sure the windshield seal is good. As well as door seals. Several easy things to look into.
