I drive a 1999 Beetle. My temperature light came on, flashed and beeped at me and then went off several times in a day about a month ago. I added coolant and everything seemed to be fine until yesterday. The light flashed and beeped and then went off when I first got in the car and then several more times throughout the day. From what I understand this means that I probably have some sort of leak? Is this right? I just wanted to ask for advice before I take it in and sound like an idiot girl when I try to explain my problem...
Thanks! |

Just so you know, continuing to drive while the red light's flashing at you is asking for engine damage
Could be just a leak, but could be the water pump. The sooner you check it, the less additional damage you're likely to cause.

Thanks! I was plannng to have it checked as soon as possible and I don't intend to drive it until I am able to get it checked because I was aware that it would likely cause additional trouble. I just couldn't take it in today and was curious as to the possibilities.

I say your waterpump failed. The impeller is made of plastic and it tends to disintegrate over the years. It either breaks into pieces or it no longer is attached to the pump shaft. It's internal so you won't be able to tell just by looking at it nor would you necessarily see a leak. There's nothing left of the impeller to circulate the coolant, thus the temperature warning light coming on. Given the age of your car, I'm almost positive that's the problem. If the timing belt hasn't been changed within the last 60K miles, you may as well it replaced since that needs to be removed to get at the pump. Good luck.
