Just wanted to pass along a recent experience for all you beetle lovers. For the last several months I have noticed a slight idle problem in my beetle. Especially when sitting at stop lights for long periods of time. I noticed that sometimes the idle would drop almost to the point that I thought the car might die but would quickly recover. Honestly didn't pay much attention as the car has 114K miles. I figured it was just a sign of age. As I pulled into the office parking lot 2 days ago and parked the car, I noticed a VERY rough idle and the car died. I attempted to restart to no avail. After viewing posts on newbeetle I checked the large hose that runs from the air filter box to the side of the motor. Sure enough, when I inspected the car with a fellow employee, the hose had come off on the motor side. We put the hose back on and started her up and she nows purrs like a kitten. As a matter of fact the slight idle issue I had experienced before is also gone. The idle now holds steady consistently. The best I can figure is the last time I had the oil changed someone pulled to hard on the air filter box and loosened the hose that eventuall worked its way off.
I was so releived to know that it was such a simple fix. Hope this helps someone out there. Thanks for all the great info. |

It sounds like the hose that you are talking about is from the Secondary Air Injection Pump. I had the same issue with my '03...the hose seems to loose it's ability to lock to the airbox (or pump) as it ages. With mine, the hose had come off at both the pump and the air box. When I started the car, it not only idled rough, but sounded like a dustbuster because of the air pump making such a racket.

Hi People
Just read your posts regarding the idle issues. I have a 1.6 2004 Beetle thats done 124k and it won't idle smoothly, sometimes 1600 rpm sometimes 800rpm but always rough. I've checked the hoses as suggested in previous posts and they where in fact loose, having refastened these the problem hasn't gone away. I was interested in the dust buster description, the little fan effect thing (what ever it does) doesn't make any noise on my engine, is this possibly the fault and is there a way to test it or a fuse that may have blown?. I don't want to go down the route of replacing part on a possibility any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks |
