Default Replacing a worn stick shift / gear lever gaiter

I've just ordered a replacement stick shift/ gear lever gaiter as my standard one's started looking a bit tired

I got my new gaiter on e-bay and the bumpf reckons it's fairly straight forward to change but as always, any advice or tips will be very much appreciated.

Just make sure the shift knob is on there tightly. It's not fun the first time it comes off in your hands.

Pop out the rectangular surround on the bottom of the boot, and don't break that piece. You'll need it again.
There's staples holding it to the 'leather' which are easier to take out once you have the whole assy out of the car.
Now turn the boot inside out until you see a shiny metal clip that crimps it around the lever. You need to cut that - no way around it. Once you do, pull up on the knob, and the whole thing should come off.

To put in the new assembly, you'll need either a hose clamp or a zip tie to replace the metal clip you've had to cut.

Yipee new gaiter has arrived!

I've removed the old one ( I just cut it out with a pair of scissors ) and am about to fit in the new one. Before I make a mistake is this the clip that needs cutting off from the top of the stick shift....
.

... if it is, it seems that metal of the clip is quite thick and access fairly restricted. I don't think my dinky snips are gonna be strong enough. What did you use to cut yours?

I used a dremel tool.

That's the metal clip holding your shift knob onto the shaft.

That indeed is the clip and it turns out it's not as hard as it looks. A very easy job, many thanks for all the help.
