Question HELP I cant get the back hatch on my wifes 2003 beetle open

Hello, my wife owns a 2003 beetle and a while back she started having trouble with the hatch not opening. then it got to where to get it to open you would have to hit it a couple of times and then it would open. you could always here (im guessing the actuator or something) and now it has gotten to where you hear nothing and the trunk will not open with the remote nor the inside can anyone help? we are expecting our first baby boy and i have to have somthing done before he gets here thank you. i tried taking it to the dealer but they wont a rediculous amount just to diagnose the problem.

Our 2005 has an emergency boot release mounted to one side of the latch assembly of the boot lid accessible from the inside. Its just a plastic tag with a boot symbol on it and appears to have a cable tie which goes directly to the latch.
If yours hasn't one of these you may have to remove the boot lid cover unless someone else has a clue.
If you do get it open try spraying it liberally with WD40 or similar (this is what the dealers will do)

i had something similar, there is a small plastic piece behind the cover for the trunk lid, where the lever has stripped out the plastic, cause you know plastic and metal mesh so well, but anyway it was like a 50 cent fix or something cheap like that, just try taking that back cover off of the trunk and hit the button see if anything seems to come out that shouldn't (follow the lock mechanism back and watch where the moving parts are, sorry i dont have any pics, but it has been like 5 years since this has happened to me. Let me know if it was this or something else, i will try to think of more stuff that it could be.
