Instrument Cluster

Has anyone ever changed out their instrument cluster? Mine has issues and I need to swap it out. Further, does anyone know if you have to get one from the same engine, transmission type. They all look exactly the same. For example, a 2.0 automatic looks exactly the same as my 1.8 MT.

Also, how difficult is the swap?

Yes, it needs to match engine and transmission type minimum.
You might even have to check to make sure that it has the same code on it because some years might have changes.

The face of it is standard, but there might be changes to the guts.

You will also have to get the dealership to flash the cluster to get to odometer to read correctly.

I had my TDI's replaced, purchased it a couple hundred bucks cheaper through 1stvwparts.com - called them to make sure that I got the correct cluster, then had a local dealership install and flash it.
