Default interior light not working

May sound like a dumb question but isn't the interior lights suppose to come on when you open the door. Mine only tends to come on when the unlock is pressed on the key fob or the key is taken out of the ignition.Any info would be great. Never had vw before and not sure if this is normal or not. Also I don't hear a bell or alarm if the lights are left on when I get out. I've done this many times, guess I'm used to my truck that automatically turned them off. Thanks for the help

It's the dreaded switch in the door. Mine does it too, for both doors now I think it's about $100 new but I could be low, might be $150

Do you have a switch on your roof above your rear view mirror? There are three settings on it, turn on.. turn off or you can set it to not come on when the doors are open.

The headlights being on and the car not dinging when the door is opened is the clue it's not just the switch on the mirror. Sad to say I've left mine on 2 times. I'm just glad my battery didn't drain and I was able to start him up.

I wasn't sure if the switch being turned off and the ding would be related to the same problem.

Where are these switches located? How do you get to them?
