Default key won't disable anti-theft system!?!

Help! Our problem is that suddenly the key (the only one we have--bought the car used) won't disable the anti-theft system on our 2000 New Beetle! The other problem is we live on an island, and the nearest VW dealer is 2 hours away. Anyone have a quick fix? NO we're not trying to steal a car!!!

When you use the key in the keyhole does it disable/enable the alarm? It should. Does your key start the car? If its does not then you need to recode it. Is this a valet key or a switchblade key? I believe there is a way to recode the chip in your key by way of the door lock for that model year, someone else will have to chime in though as I don't know the process, I have a 2002. Otherwise the dealer has to recode the key to the car.
