Default Check Engine Light

The check engine light on my 2003 VW Beetle Vert came on yesterday. As Autozone doesn't check the codes anymore, I decided to pay Pepboys $20 to just read the codes. They told me that there was no communication with the car computer. they tried three different types of scanners. Does any one have any suggestions as to what could be the problem?

AZ doesn't do check codes anymore? that's weird.. have someone else check your computer, esp someone with a vag-com

I'd go to a different autozone. You can also go to Murrays & rent their scan tool. You buy it & return it for full credit. Tell them you want to rent one for a VW.

Thanks. I haven't seen a Murrays out here in Los Angeles. I'll be on the lookout.

Yes, they DO check codes, at least in Louisiana. They have a big sign in the window, free engine code check. The people who won't do it are being jerks.

I took my car to three different places and nowhere could the scanner communicate with the car's computer. Any idea what can be wrong?

You might have a bent/missing pin in the OBD hook up under your dash....
